Seal for MFI camshaft drive 49mm for later engines

While I'm rebuilding a vintage race large bore motor this winter, I'm making the mod to do the MFI drive on the left side camshaft. It involves removing the 49mm plug at the front of the camshaft bore in the cam tower to make way for the seal where the cam drive pokes through. It was pointed out to me recently that a regular 47mm MFI cam drive seal won't fit. I found a source for a 49mm seal with the correct 35mm ID. Do the specs below look correct for this type of seal?

Rotary Shaft Seal Double Lip Shaft Dia. 35mm Width 8mm For Bore Dia. 49mm Nitrile Rubber Lip Material.
•Brand : AVX Seals
•Item Sku : TC35x49x8
•Type : TC 35x49x8 mm
•Inner : 35mm
•Outer : 49mm
•Width : 8mm
•Size : 35mm x 49mm x 8mm
•Seal Material : Nitrile Butadiene Rubber
•Temperature Range : -40 to 248 F

I can't find the info in my notes, here somewhere. Google the seal size you need, ID, OD and width, and you will come up with a number of sources, I have used the Honda one. Bob

I went through this - ordered the factory seal without thinking about the bore diameter. Anyway, a seal is a seal, and you are on the right track. For some reason I thought mine was 7mm but 8 will probably be fine. If you check my build thread you might find the exact size I used. I can have a look later when I'm on a bigger screen.

This is where I found the description I posted above:

https://www.avxseals.com/Shaft-Oil-Seals-TC35x49x8-p/tc35x49x8.htm

They have ones in different widths. I measured a 47 mm seal from an early 911 and I think it was 8mm, so I was looking for that size.

Here's the post where I show the factory part (the wrong one for our application):

Project Heavy Metal - an all steel classic, remastered

Factory is 47 x 7 x 35 according to the one I purchased. I'm pretty sure you'd be fine with 8mm width if that's what comes to hand easiest. Knowing me, I punched the dimensions into ebay and hit "buy it now" on whatever came up.

The eBay tip works amazingly well. Thanks for that tip as well.

That's what I use. I remember being in your shop one day when I was working out my 3.0 MFI project, and this was the solution you recommended. It's worked great.

Any chance you have a part number for me to check? 999 113 246 40 / Reinz 81 19539-10 is not what you think off?

I'm sorry, I don't think I ever had one. This was a long time ago, and I think John just grabbed one for me that he had on hand.

I recall making a plate to hold it, then you found one like it.

Actually found it. Uses a standard triangle thrust plate gasket against the end of the cam tower. I think I started with some sort of block-off plate for a 964 when the power steering was deleted to use in an earlier car. Lathed it down to size.

Yeah, boy, it's been too long. I remember whatever it was, it was "off the shelf". I should have written down some of that stuff.
