Msd?
Im in the process of installing a fresh 76 2.7 with PMO 40s into my 72 911T.
its been brought to my attention that i need to ditch the factory 0.30bosch distributor since I'm running cabs with no vacuum and a lack of advance.. What ignition systems are an option ? |

You could begin with the Bosch distributor they used in 911S and RS engines (e.g. 0 231 184 004 - 3BOS6U1). If your build is similar, the advance curve should be fairly close. You can also install an aftermarket breakerless conversion kit for more consistent ignition timing and/or an electronic box (transistorized or CD) for higher spark output.
Most any Porsche distributor with a mechanical advance system can be modified to conform to your engine specs. Beyond that, are a multitude of electronic boxes, many with infinitely variable timing controls. To maximize, use in conjunction with extensive road and/or rolling dynomometers, sensors and instrumentation. Others can chime in with their favorite aftermarket system. Sherwood |

Richard Parr at PMO recommends MSD. I have PMO 46's on a 3.0. It only works right with the MSD. The Bosch CDI didn"t cut it. And it is more than the box. Factory plug wires not good with MSD. I have Clewett wires and they are very nice. Also need the MSD blaster coil. You will have to send your distributor out for mod without vacuum. Various places do this. Search. I learned this through trial and error. Lots of error that cost $$. Also, Dennis Powell (Timmy2) has a nifty harness for connecting the MSD without cutting your harness. Super simple hook up. Call him. Great guy. Hope this helps.

All of the above.
Add Pertronix magnetic pickup conversion (points replacement) for your distributor.

And the high vibration coil if running in stock upside down location.
I went with the programmable MSD ignition and locked out the distributor myself. It lets you program in a better timing curve without paying someone to re-curve the distributor.

I went with MSD and Blaster coil along with an Ignition123 distributor when we retrofitted to PMOs.

^^^ This I have the same set up couldn’t be simpler, more reliable, and definitely an improvement.

If you are willing to set down the bucks ($1300) the Electromotive XDi crank fire system (or itps update) works well and has infinitely adjustable timing. This will completely eliminate the distributor so you don't have to buy caps and rotors in the future. I put one of these systems on a 3.3SS twin plug engine I built several years ago and it has worked perfectly.
