question: Switching back to rubber from Poly Bronze...

QuicK question:
( hopefully!)
I am switching to `Sport-Hardness` rubber bushings on the front ``A`` arms from Poly-Bronze.. I notice there is now a `permanent` steel-bushing/sleeve glued on for the Poly-Bronze which changes the `lip` by 1mm and circumference by 2mm will the rubber be able to fit on these now non-stock ``A`` arms ? Or do I have to start over with stock ``A`` arms?

Thanks in advance for you response!

I believe you will have to remove the steel collars or buy new "A" arms. the steel collars are JB weld glued on. It tales about 500-600 deg F to malt the glue and remove the collars.

Good luck with your project,

Rahl

Thanks Rahl,

i feared as much.. was hoping the rubber would just 'conform' to the slight variation in tolerance...

Rubber will not fit over the PB races. Does not take much heat with a propane torch to soften the epoxy enough to remove the races. Then make sure to clean off the old epoxy before installing the new bushings.

Just Curious, why remove them?

Yeah.. why remove them? Good question. Not sure I have the best answer for you:
I was in the process of installing a completely refreshed race-suspension-system, almost finished in fact: bigger torsion bars, re-valved shocks, front & rear mono-balls, poly-bronze bushings..everything was getting close to DONE... THEN before completing the task I thought better of the direction I was going and switched out some of the stuff for brand new rubber. Out came all the metal to metal bushings and out came the HUGE torsion bars for smaller torsions. Decide to bring just about everything sport -rubber. I had changed my mind 3/4 of the way through. Paid for everything twice and have done everything twice. (Chuck Moreland probably thinks I own two cars ! j/k *)
Rear trailing arms will keep the nice poly bronze bushings and amazing looking ASP's ...
Speaking of Elephant Racing, I just thought to ask them the same question about removal and they say: " .. to get the race off the control arm you want to use a cutoff wheel, and cut a slit down the middle of the race. Then you want to use a propane torch and heat it up real good to loosen the epoxy. Once it's heated up and the epoxy is soft you want to use a hammer and chisel to work the race off the control arm. "

Nice to know what is possible.

So, you guys know where I am this weekend...

*To be clear: Suspension parts going on/off are a mix of brand new & lightly used components from a parted-out race-car & have less than 50 miles on them..These particular "A" arms came already set-up with the races glued on, some of the 'heavy lifting' was already done. SO it's not as crazy as it sounds... is it?
