G50 Shifter Repair Help Needed

Help please...I bought the JWest shifter repair kit. My shifter definitely needed it, but I’m stuck. After Removing the shifter housing; and pulling the clip that’s supposed to hold the pin in place that runs through the nylon (plastic) part at the bottom of the shifter; I thought the pin would simply come out. It did not. I have tried vice grips; even broke the tip of a flathead screwdriver. I may have bent the pin...I thought the pin should be pulled out in the direction of the arrow in the photo...what am I doing wrong?

Possible corrosion on the clip end holding up the pin. Try lubing up the clip end and hitting it out with a hammer and punch. Buy a new pin to replace it.

When you reinstall the shifter body into the shifter base there is an adjustment you will need to make. Check out post 16 in this thread. It makes a difference.

New shifter slop? Bushings gone?

Try using a press style of removal. If your bench vise is big enough you can use it and some ratchet wrench sockets of suitable size to push it out. Or if you have a large C-clamp that can work too.

Hello...I believe the pin is pushed out in the opposite direction your arrow shows.

Review the diagram in post 5, It looks like the pin is part #5 on the image.G50 1989 Sloppy Shifter

Thank you all for entertaining the idiot...I was trying to pull the pin out the wrong way...thinking it was a two piece element...I just couldn’t understand how the clip worked, because the smaller end also seemed to be a business end...even broke the tip of a cheap flat head screwdriver...my only excuse is that I have been on drugs (for legit medical needs)...ugh...just ordered a new pin and clip, since I bent the current one (still need to punch out the current one).

JWest shifter repair kit and new shifter coupler installed...got the install 9/10, but ended up in the shop to get the shift rod back into place. My effort still led to over a half inch on the end of the rod.

Also, after 45+ mins of trying to keep the internal o-ring in place as the nylon part went back in the aluminum housing, I used a small socket to coax the o-ring to stay put. Hopefully, that helps someone else’s frustration meter keep out of the red.

Have to say the net result is great...no slop...goes into gear with a crisp, solid feel. It is not as easy as I had hoped, but well worth it.

I had to take my 1988 3.2 in for some work. I have a JWest shifter repair kit that I was going to install next winter. Seeing an opportunity, I gave it to the shop and let them mess with it. What an amazing difference. So this is what a G50 is supposed to shift like!!!! Wow.

Congrats! When you’re ready for more, the JWest Shift Coupler should be on your list too...happy driving!

Yep, just did the bushings and coupler. Wow! My shifter wasn’t bad, but now it’s great! This is a “must do” for any G50 with some miles on it.
