Wires under the footwell carpet

I'm planning to install a dead pedal , so I've been reading threads about it.

On particular post caught my attention in a BIG way!

The guy was drilling the holes to mount a dead pedal when he hit a wire that was under the carpet! Not good! He went on to describe the glowing drill bit and fireworks show.

Does anyone know a way to determine the locations of wires under the carpet (short of having a portable X-Ray machine?

You can use a non-contact voltage detector to check for live wires, like you would when drilling into a finished wall.

However, I would move the carpet and examine.

Re-adhering the carpet is quite easy. Just pull it up and look.

I didn't realize that! Thanks, and it makes sense in retrospect.
