The photo is of a piece of square tube with a thread.

But, what is it for?

It's a square receiver insert that is either molded or pressed into plastic parts. so you can slide square shaped components into.

I doubt it is threaded but more ribbed. I am guessing it is an insert for some injection molded part and the ribs are for bite.
