That black wire was connected to the brush unit. Why would I cut it off?

Most have been upgraded to the external version of the regulator as Porsche recommended in the service bulletin I linked to. I believe that’s what Ivan assumed.

LIRS6 07-23-2020 10:05 AM

... internal ...

and thanks for the link - will take to shop to day, and if no issue to rebuild will go that route vs. the "upgrade" to internal which would require new air duct etc.

Yes, I meant internal. I suspect the internal regulator is more "precise" due to being close to the windings... but at a higher temp location for sure than off to the side.

Question - what type of bolts can I use to secure the shroud to the alternator housing, given it is magnesium. Can I use stainless steel?

Probably just an incorrect belt installed - too long nor maybe too narrow. Can you read the markings on it, should be 10x710

It's 10 x 715

Our host shows 10 x 725 as the appropriate size for my '79, as does other sites. 710 is shown for a turbo.

But as in my case if there were 7 shims on the outer side of the "pulley" and none on the inside, wouldn't that suggest that the 715 belt is too long - so how would a 10 x 725 make sense? Or is my thinking flawed?

Jason, this probably isn't helping... But my '79 has 9.5 x 710.

walt 07-26-2020 05:28 PM

If you place more shims on the inside you effectively reduce the diameter of the pulley by allowing the belt to sit lower in the "V". In this case you will want a shorter belt. Try the 10 x 710.

Thank you Bill and Walt. Will purchase a 710

I fought the fan belt fitment for a while. I finally broke down and bought the Porsche branded belt from Pelican. It simply works right with the normal amounts of shims. I have yet to find a belt that the local FLAPS or any local source that has the precise "correct" size.

You can get a belt to work long enough to get you home, but get the German made proper belt and it is easy, just expensive.

Always had good luck with Conti, not sure who makes them for Porsche.

Me too. I got told fairly early on to only buy the Porsche branded ones and have done so. If I remember correctly it was to do with the angle of the sides being correct for the pulleys. Others will work but will need more adjustment as they wear to fit the pulley.

goodyear made belts for Porsche...

I lived in Germany for three years up until 2017. I regularly took my 88 3.2 to 6200 RPM in 5th gear and cruised for extended periods above 130 mph. Purred like a kitten. Get that alternator/fan assembly taken care of and push it hard once warmed up!

I hit 5,000+ RPM in 5th on the track at Charlotte Super-speedway. The wind noise was horrendous, as we had to run with windows down. I don't have the front or rear spoiler and if I was to get to 120+ ever again I would want the tail and the front spoiler. Since I see little chance or running that hard anytime soon, I will stick to the no spoiler look.

I have the factory front and rear spoilers. Felt completely planted. Even did a few max braking stops from 140 mph on the Autobahn with traffic pulling out and it felt planted and secure. The spoilers are great.

No doubt that at the high speeds, they do the job. Personally on a narrow body G model, I never cared for the tail and spoilers on the car look. I love them on a wide body car.

Since I rarely get to triple digits at all, I will stay with no spoilers. Just a personal preference.

I do appreciate the clean lines of the no spoiler cars for sure, especially the earlier years. My car did not come with the spoilers. Owner immediately previous to me put on the Carrera tail without front spoiler. I added the front spoiler as I've read the rear spoiler alone without a front spoiler can be unpredictable.

Alt removal/refitting was a pain but gave me a chance to get some wrenching in and learn more. Looked on line including our host but could not find a sure-fit alt with external VR, and I did not want to go the route of the mod to internal. Brought alt to a local shop and they rebuilt it soup to nuts, but hammered me on the cost ($385). Went to work at the re-installation and kept my fingers crossed that a) I would get alt light with key turned, and b) that when engine fired the light would go out, and the alt would be charging.

Success!:

Thanks for the suggestions/comments.

As a footnote, I replaced the 10 x 725 belt with a 10 x 710 belt; 3 shims inside/3 shims outside and it was good to go.

Edit: - I was concerned that the belt might be too tight, so I moved two more shims to the inside; five in, one out
