$385??? That's insane.

ClickClickBoom 08-09-2020 08:29 AM

Nice when it works out! Double check your actual voltage at the battery terminals 13.9 to 14.2 is my range with the beast Nippondenso I installed.

That's including NY tax :)

OP,
Nice voltmeter there. Congrats on the DIY.

Agreed. Where did you get that?

Palo Alto Speedometer

Had the conversion done about a year ago, very glad I did it. The cost was about $750. Not cheap I know, but I love the look and function. Hartmut Mees at PA was great to deal with.

hows that possible?!

You will learn to love the voltmeter on the tach. After many years of having mine I find myself checking voltage as often as oil pressure and oil temp. It is comforting to KNOW that the alternator is charging at the proper voltage. I had my internal voltage regulator give up the ghost, and it nearly cooked my battery back before I had the volt meter.

Walt in post #33 notes 710 as well. The 725 that was previously on my car was waaaay too long (zero shims inside/7 outside, as configured by engine re-builder).

Question - how do you judge correct tension of the fan belt? Deflection should be about 1/2 inch at mid-point, right? ... but how much pressure are you using to test it? I don't want a too-tight belt, given my experience with alt bearing failure.

OK, now for that 6200 RPM blast part 2.

walt 08-10-2020 11:51 AM

Just apply moderate finger pressure to the center of the belt, deflection should be 1/4" to 1/2". The factory probably had a spec for it but I have never seen it.

Thank you Walt

The way I look at it is to tighten it just enough so it doesn't squeal.

Mine is possibly a little more loose than others would have it - intentionally. Another shim and it would be tighter than I would want it. So I sprayed some stuff called belt dressing on it. It stops belts slipping and squeaking. I had it already for a steering pump belt on a Corolla, so I thought I'd use it on the SC. Works well.

GH85Carrera 08-10-2020 01:03 PM

I will say it again, just get the Porsche branded fan belt. It is the right size, and has the right angle to the sides of the belt. Yea, it is expensive, but it works like it is supposed to without moving shims around.

I went through a couple of aftermarket belts and could not get them to fit right. The Porsceh belt is perfect fit. Almost like it was designed for the car! ;)

My choice, I'm glad i did it. Where I feel I got screwed was the cost for re-build of alt.

Yea, that rebuilder charged you some NYC 5th Avenue rent rates.

Or get the Clewett pulley system and flat ribbed belt. I installed and wouldn't consider going back. I have a thread somewhere. Modern technology for power transmission. But then I also replaced the alternator with a new design Nippondenso. The original 911 alternator was at its potential limit for amperage and design, the ND produces 95amps off idle and 140-170a depending on power transmission efficiency. If you use A/C ad drive in the city its the answer.

Looked on line including our host but could not find a sure-fit alt with external VR, and I did not want to go the route of the mod to internal. Brought alt to a local shop and they rebuilt it soup to nuts, but hammered me on the cost ($385). Went to work at the re-installation and kept my fingers crossed that a) I would get alt light with key turned, and b) that when engine fired the light would go out, and the alt would be charging.

Success!:

I love a happy ending!

Now, back to redline!
