Is sealant/bedding material needed under chrome trim?

I seem to remember seeing a comment in a thread saying that a sealant or bedding material should be used underneath chrome trim on door and targa window chrome. Is this true?

![]() If so, should I use this stuff....or 3M Strip-Caulk? ![]() My instincts tell me that this stuff might actually trap moisture and promote rust.

I use good electrical tape. It's close to what the factory used

The factory used some sort of sealant under the rear window trim, but not on the door. I would put something under the door trim, but not something that would stick to the paint. Electrical tape or maybe some thin foam insulator tape sounds like a good option there.

I noticed that the seal under one vent window had remnants of some kind of cloth tape under it. Is this the kind of electrical tape you mean?

butyl rubber sealant tape, a very thin bead along where the holes are. Don't use any silicone based stuff, it traps moisture.

What's the purpose of the sealant? Water intrusion doesn't seem to be a problem under the chrome pieces you mention.

I can't speak to the targa but there was some trim in the rear quarter windows of the coupe as well as the door trim.

That's the original. Good electrical tape seems to serve the same purpose which I think is to both protect the surface and stop rattling

On the rear chrome trim (bottom of rear Targa glass) there is an actual plastic seal with a bead on it that goes under it. DO NOT just use tape. The bead goes on the OUTSIDE of the trim and the screws that attach the trim go right through the seal to secure it

jrsully- Is there a vendor that sells this plastic seal? I've seen something like you describe on some old schematics, but not on Pelican's site. Do you have the part number by any chance?

THis seal is part number 901-565-557-40 and is now carried by our host. Just picked up a couple of them for my rear window project.

I also found that Porsche lists a butyl tape part number that goes under the chrome trim. Looks like the 3m caulk tape shown up above. I'm not sure how far up this needs to be installed but its listed in the parts diagrams.
