Jerry Woods Carrera Chain Tensioner mod question...
All,
i am in the process of attempting to remove the piston retaining clip to perform the Jerry Woods mod to prevent my chain tensioner from failing at the track. in any event, i am having a tough time getting that clip out of the tensioner. I keep bending up any tools that are small enough to get down in there, any ideas? Below is the thread that im reviewing... Shops that don't recommend Carrera Tensioner Update?

never mind...my brain was not functioning. I just needed to compress the piston till i could spin the clip around to the opening and it came right out.
if it were a new tensioner, the grenade pin would be in there and this would not be an issue. With the piston uncompressed, it puts pressure on the clip which makes it very difficult to work with. hope this helps someone else...maybe ![]()

and to further contribute to my own project, i found the sleeve at McCoy's in San Marcos Texas on the shelf. I'm sure its pretty available just about any hardware store. Less than $4
below is a pic of the part number. the sleeve is just slightly smaller than the piston and slides into the tensioner body without any resistance. ![]() ![]()

I did this mod with my tensioners but used stainless tube. I think it may have saved me, I have tensioner that may be lazy causing the chain to rattle for a few minutes until warm. I have ordered a new tensioner to replace it and will do the same mid on the new one.

At COTA, my left side tensioner failed and i believe i skipped a tooth on that side...
all 3 intake rockers broke along with piston #1. There were other factors including the idiot behind the wheel who may or may not have over revved the engine coming into turn 11, right before she blew up ![]() upon disassembly, the left tensioner some how pushed the cylinder bottom out and the retaining clip for that piece was no where to be found. so in that case, I'm thinking this particular mod would not have done any good. I'm trying to figure out how that clip could have come loose. Perhaps it was rebuilt by the previous owner and the clip was not secure...or forgotten. Ill take some of the blame for not having the where-with-all to look at the tensioner when i had things apart. In any event, I think this particular mod is certainly a no-brainer after going thru the exercise. below is a pic of my tensioner that did not have a clip and also a pic of what it was supposed to look like. ![]() ![]()
