Ground strap
Does the ground strap near the transmission on a 79SC have to be hooked up in order for the car to run right and if so, why was my car running ok without it????

Just put the motor back in my '71 and it wouldn't crank over without it.

Sometimes a ground path will be "found" all by itself, in ways you don't want to do...like the trans linkage and rods becoming a ground path...
Renew OEM ground straps periodically and adding more grounds is a good thing... ---Wil Ferch

One of the alternate ground paths for the starter is through the clutch cable. This tends to overheat the steel wires therein, ruining their temper. Then they begin to break and the clutch cable begins to stretch and hangup. Restore your grounds and save yourself a future headache. Jim

I'll third these notions. You really don't want your starter current and spark current going back to ground through your clutch and throttle linkages... Even worse were you to have stainless fuel lines... Potential connection there... THat's why I don't use 'em for the last connection point to the motor...

Wow, you guys are scaring me. I just put the motor back in a little while ago so it hasn’t been disconnected for very long. I will not make this mistake again. (yeah right, that’s what we always say)
