SSI stainless steel muffler - user experience?
I am replacing the rusty headers on my 1971 911T with SSI headers. My muffler is also a little rusty, but still serviceable. Still I am considering also upgrading the muffler and have fallen into the rabbit hole of online muffler information for the 911. There are a lot of mufflers on offer, but I only find videos with sound of the SCART (nice sound, but expensive) and Dansk (which I already know from my ´77).
My dealer wants to sell me a stainless steel muffler from SSI and claims that it is better finished than Dansk (although it is also produced by JP Group, apparently). It has a 60mm outlet which esthetically will fit better to the car, but it is not marketed as "Sport" so I guess it will not give more music - only more tinny from the SS. It is difficult to find information about it online, but searching on the net for the product number reveals this: https://www.jpgroupclassic.com/product/?id=1620611200 Does anyone in here have any experince with this muffler? Sound, quality, how does it differ from the ordinary Dansk muffler? Or should I just rob a bank and go for the SCART? Muddy waters this muffler business... |

Most user's with big post numbers on this forum will probably knock me or this recommendation.
I've had a few 911's with aftermarket and $$ mufflers seeking a "sport" sound. I have enjoyed the ouput and harmonics of the Bursch muffler. It's not expensive and weighs less than most others. The sound is classic 6 cyl. sports car with no drone. They are made of mild steel [not stainless] which might not work out in a rust belt state. Otherwise not a bad choice. 2 in 1 out |

Stainless tends to lose the "noise" after it's been used for a while and carbons up a bit. Regular steel mufflers are a PITA with their rusting issues
Just my opinion.

Thank you for the link @spyerx. That is one of the nicest sounding 911s I have heard! And a beautiful car.
Your write that it is the SSI Sport muffler, but I only find the normal SSI muffler on JP Groups homepage. I guess it is the same. How is the fit? From the photos it looks as if the outlet is angled towards the back (like Dansk) and not a little bit to the side (like original). Damn - that was one of the most expensive videos I have ever watched. Now I want an SSI:-) |

I don't recall SSI Inc. ever made mufflers originally, so you are prolly getting a muffler made by the company that bought the SSI company and naming rights. I forget who it was that obtained SSI but it was an established exhaust manufacture like billy boat or another like company.
ive have not seen the newly produced SSI's, but from what ive read is they are not what they were in regards to quality of build. YRMV. |

SSI and Hardware was bought by Dansk in Denmark. I bought them in Nov. 2017 and received a superb quality. Perfectly welded an they fit with no problems. And ... they come in Bags as before. So, no change in quality: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

So i didn’t buy them. Previous owner did and receipts say stainless ssi and sport muffler. Could be a misprint and just a regular stainless ssi muffler. He put on about 2016.
Fitment is good. The engine with Weber carbs and exhaust will be for sale in a few months. Have a nasty itb efi hot rod 2.8 motor being built.... Mk headers and exhaust. Messing it up! Hahaha Last edited by spyerx; 05-19-2020 at 09:02 PM.. |

The original SSI in California did not produce mufflers. John (original owner) sold the name and the inventory to Dansk. Looks like Andrew received one of the last original sets which was repackaged, the original inventory has sense run out.

EDIT: I see that SSI was sold to Dasnk at end of 2012? Well your Info was posted at beginning of 2013. Say Goodby to SSI? I bought my set in Dec. 2017, .... so a thought: could it really be that the remaining inventory taken over from SSI was really that huge that still customers where able to get a set of these still remaining in stock 3 Years later? So, if such a small amount of SSIs will be sold on the worlds market "per year", so dec 2017 they still where stock .... then this business would make it for Dansk at least not that profitable ;-) Just a thought.

I replaced the steel muffler by a Dansk stainless one on a 2.7 and not happy with the sound. Already had the stainless headers.

mr wout; how did the stainless muffler disappoint you, compared to your previous steel one ? Was it too noisy ? too quiet ? too harsh or too tinny maybe ? And did you use it for any time, to get used to it and to let it 'carbon up' which could change sound character ?

I got one OG pair of SSI back in 2013.
expensive. but you buy these only once in your lifetime. super nice quality. and I love the clean look of them. very easy to wipe in case you have an oil leak issue.

I purchased my SSI in spring of 2017 along with a dansek sport muffler (stainless) 2 in with 1 out and really love it. Great sound and quality on mine 83 SC coupe. Scart muffler was a consideration but expensive in mine opinion.

The steel muffler had a nice deep rumble, the stainless one is like a rattlecan. Don’t really know how to explain it in English but it’s a thin metal sound if you understand? Maybe it’s because the old steel one was not 100% ‘closed’ anymore, don’t know. Car is a stock 2,7 with the stainless (think) ssi headers.
