what is this on my short shift lever?

The previous owner put a short shift kit on my car. I am trying to change the stock shift knob to an aftermarket. All tutorials say to simply knock the old knob off with a 15mm wrench and a hammer. My shift lever has a welded plate under the shift knob. Is this custom or common for the short shift kits?
knob looks stock and moves/twists a little, but has no plans of coming off. ideas?

Factory short shifter has a ring at the base of the knob. Knob still needs to be knocked off in the same manner, but you may need to be creative to find something that will either be bigger and not hit the ring, or get between the ring and the knob. Good luck!

Another option is there may be screw/bolt at the top of the knob (under the cover) holding it to the shaft. If it's not factory, no telling how it attaches.

sozaysven, What year is your 911? 86 and earlier, 915 cars are press on, G50 cars have an allen bolt under the shift pattern cap.

I don't recall the exact size, but you can find an open faced wrench that fits around the shaft and put it under the shift-knob and use a soft/rubber-hammer to tap it off from under the wrench.

That said...I tried that with mine and it was a no-go. I got worried I might screw something up in the tranny with all the hammering, so I just cut the knob off with a dremel.

I believe that welded collar under the knob is a stop for the factory leather or rubber boot. It can be deleted without any negative issues.

I use a simple rubber strap wrench and twist the knob off. Much less potential for damaging the knob, and it works quickly every time.
