Need help inspecting a car in Chicago

Good Morning Pelican Parts, I am narrowing down my search for my first 911. Located a 79' SC in Chicago with an 84' 3.2 that I am really interested in. Is anyone aware of a good shop or even a local technician in the Park Ridge area who might be able to help? I know there are some people in CA who actually travel to look at the car on site rather than having the seller bring it in and i think that would be ideal but certainly not a requirement. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Better buy it quick before someone steals it and sets it on fire.

No, just ignore him.

As for getting the car inspected I'd probably start with a forum search. There are lots of threads with recommended mechanics in different areas around the country. I'm not local so I can't help in that regard but I'm someone will stop by with some recs soon.

Midwest Performance Cars - Andy has a shop just outside of the loop and in Northbrook. Both are basically Porsche only and the downtown location does a ton of aircooled work.

Perfect Power in Buffalo Grove is another really great aircooled shop.

I had Midwest Performance give my car a post-purchase PPI (so logical, I know) five years ago when I bought my car, and I used them to help me catch up on some things on my project list earlier this summer - I was happy with them. Their city location is at Ogden and Lake, near the Loop and 90/94 - that's the one I used since I lived in the city. I'm not familiar with their other location but they seem equidistant from you.

Tommy Z -- are you in CA? If so, be sure you have a clear understanding of the extra steps needed to register an emission compliant 3.2 converted SC in CA and additional clarification from the seller/PPI person on whether the 3.2 conversion preserved emissions components.

Darrin, I appreciate the advice. No, I'm in Florida and there are so such restraints for emissions. However the seller does state that the CAT is intact and meets CA standards regardless.

I wound up going with a shop called Mid-West Eurosport in Bensonville right near O'Hare. They specialize in P-Cars and consider themselves a race ready specialist shop. Lot's of interesting projects on their web site and the owner Roy is really nice and sounds super thorough. It's getting inspected today so fingers crossed!

TommyZ, I’ve been there and nice enough place. Definitely a race shop and look to focus on 944 but more than enough 911s there. Nice enough folk.

I had a mechanic bundle a PPI. Leakdown, compression and then borescope. Ask lots of questions and try and be as knowledgeable as you can. Send photos if you do the deal.

FWIW I lived in Park Ridge. It’s a very nice, well to do community. So someone living there probably had the resources to take care of the car. Whether they did or not is a different question.

I live a stone's throw from Park Ridge, actually grew up there. I work right down the street from the Midwest Eurosport.
