Tire question

Most likely a stupid question, but perhaps I can learn something new. I have a set of brand new performance tires, never mounted, and the tires are over 6 years old (don't ask, lol). I know that they should not be driven on. Is there any purpose for which they can be safely used...or just trash?

Less than ideal but probably still usable for driving around town. If you will wear them out in 1-2 years they are probably still worth mounting, knowing that their best years are behind them.

I've always heard 8 years is the expiration. But if you don't want to drive on them, see if your local shop wants them. I donated a set of old but otherwise perfect tires to my shop, and they mounted them to a set of shop wheels and used them for "rollers".

The build date came about because shops were buying old stock and selling them as new . Not because the rubber was no longer serviceable . I used to buy a car with 20 year old bias ply tires and go race the piss out of them . Sometimes the budget dictates . Were your tires kept in the cold and dark? Then I see no problem . If they were in direct sunshine then drive them till they start to fail. For the past 15 years I was involved in training our tier one military, we would buy disposable cars, tires be dammed, and run the piss out of them. One of the best results of training would be to have a student pop a tire at speed in a turn , if we were lucky it would sound like a gun shot!. This would help the student realize it is a none event to loose a tire . So I say run what you have .

Thanks for the replies. I no longer have the car these tires were intended for, so I cannot use them. They have been stored in a garage, in the dark. Debating whether it is "right" to sell them, say for $100 or perhaps I should just post them locally for free.
