Sun Visors for the 911

New sun visors are not available for early cars, or even the later 'true' 911s thru 1988/89. You can ...

1. Buy new ones:
- Pelican sells 964 sun visors for $150 each - 964-731-031-00-CA9-M100

2. Buy used ones from say an '88 driven in a darkness (PNW, Alaska) and then parted out after a wreck... one person states he paid $125 for a pair of used ones form a Carrera.

3. Inject Foam - note Ron's comment:
Sun Visors

another foam thread:
puffy visors

Note: there are two types of this "house energy saving foam" -- the stuff that sets really quickly and the other stuff. Do NOT try using the really quick set foam. And don't ask me how I know that...

4. Recover sun visor threads:

Inexpensive sunvisor replacement alternative

- Why not recover in leather? The cost is mostly labor...

Here's my old ones:

Inexpensive sunvisor replacement alternative

I looked for replacements and found (if I recall correctly) that the Porsche items were about $200 ea, and good quality repros could be had for around $110 ea. Not liking either alternative much, I sent them out to be redone at Vinyl Specialties
(http://www.autosunvisors.com/replacement.htm).

Seems like they specialize mostly in American stuff, but they were willing to take on the odd German interloper. Just got them back today. There's a beefroll on the bottom instead of the heat-welded seam and no vanity mirror, but I was impressed with the workmanship, and the cost was just $69 (for the pair) shipped:

The fellow I dealt with is Darren Desantis, and you can reach him at vinylspe@buffnet.net, or give a call to 716-686-0577 M-F 9:30-5:00 eastern time.

4. Try to see if ones from another car will fit:
Rennlist.com\Quick question '84 911 sun visor vs. 968 -- 944 types may not fit

Dan Cobb also suggested one could try a VW bug sun visor; and others have speculated about GM cars, etc.

I carefully slit the ends open with a razor blade, cleaned out all the old foam junk and inserted 2 3/16" thicknesses of foam board. Then I sealed up the ends with super glue and a slight overlap. If they don't last I'll send them in to Darren to recover.

They look much better than the old puffed up floatation devices they used to be! Someone else called them excited blowfish.

The only info I have is that the sunvisors from a late-model 944 (post 85.5) will not fit. I actually pulled the visors out of my '86 951, and they were completely different as far as the mounting system goes.

I'm sure they could have been made to work, but probably with as much if not more effort than repairing the existing visors...

I spent the day at the junk yard looking for candidates with no luck a couple years ago. The beetle ones are different. The problem is that ours mount on a weird angle in the corner. I'm going to get mine recovered by the same guy who is doing my seats.

Cool Sun visors

I replaced my sunvisors with new ones for VW Beetle. You have to use the Porsche corner pivots and move the holder just a bit. I replaced them before a new headliner job so the old holes for the holders were covered but anyway they are really small and unnoticeable. The sunvisors cost about $30.00 for a pair and look like made for it. I can send you photos if interested.

I bought a used pair that *supposedly* came from a 993. I have not installed them yet, but I have compared them to my puffy old ones and they look like an exact replacement except the new ones have mirrors on both sides.

I bit the bullet and bought the 964 visors from our host for my mid-year. I e-bayed the old puffy ones (but otherwise in good shape) for about $50. The new ones are much nicer and my wife likes the mirrors on the back.

The guys at autosunvisors.com won't do the 2-tone visors. Mine are black/off-white. They would have to be changed to all black.Too bad.

Damn, I was going to ask if they would do that. Cipotifoso, Are those 964 ones from here two tone Ivory/Black? I'm surprised anyone would pay $50 for the old puffy ones like mine. But as you said they are undamaged, just puffy.

Balleta, Yes, please post some pictures of the VW ones. Were they new from the VW parts counter? If so what year/model? Beetle?

Last, has anyone called up Oklahoma Foreign, Parts Heaven or similiar to see if they have good used ones? Price?

balleta - the VW visor mod. sounds like a great low cost solution -- can you post pics?

great job on this thread Randy, I'm thinking of sending mine in for recovering but I would like to have them cut down an inch or two so I don't bump my head everytime I lean down to adjust my seat er somthing.

Thanks - I am hoping that everyone will send me their NOS ones in appreciation. If they don't have any then beer works...

The good thing about used visors is that many look great.

My stock visors were just to delicate for clunking around. New tinted '88 antenna glass, new tight black roof liner, and black Carrera visors look great imo.

also i installed the quieter one piece air deflector

resize your pics balleta, then the screen won't be black.

Unless these are REALLY close up shots of your black visors

usually a smaller file size + a lower resolution (in IrfanView, hit CTl-R and pick a smaller res there then re-save)

We're all waiting to see them!
