remove shifter knob 1986 targa
I have been looking around to find the appropriate way to remove this (OEM) version of the knob, and could find a few similar, but non identical to mine. Cause it is in pristine condition I do not want to scratch or damage it.
Anyone? ![]() |

Your shift knob has a replaceable crush washer. The knob with washer is pressed on the shaft. To remove twist hard and pull. When reinstalling you will need a new crush washer. New knobs are available identical to yours.

FWIW, I was unable to remove the original (but cracked) shift knob on my '86 targa without destroying it. My crush washer refused to let go (even though I was able to successfully reuse it with my replacement knob. Bottom line, if you want to keep your original knob in pristine original condition, don't (even try to) remove it

I have a 85 with the leather boot, just like that. I have tried on two occasions to remove it. It is not going to come off. I am hoping to get a replacement shift knob, and just have to get medieval on the old knob. I have tried twisting and pulling and the spanner on the bottom of the knob while whacking it with a hammer. It is like trying to remove a tow ball from a trailer hitch by just tugging. It ain't coming off without destroying the knob.

A LOT of friction, and likely some corrosion after 35 years. Mine is just stuck in place.

Thanks Folks, it feels good not be be lonely with this problem ;-)
I needed to take the shifter out for changing bushings. I finally left the knob on, pulled the leather boot over it after having disassembled the console (that is a job of many hours with all the electrics and AC) . I could pull the console over the shifter. I left the knob/boot on for the changing the collar and cup bushing . Last edited by alexandervdr; 08-31-2020 at 11:05 PM.. |

Yep. Had to cut mine off.
But prior to that...I tried what should be a good idea---take a open-faced wrench that is just large enough to fit around the shifter shaft and place it at the base of the knob. Then use a hammer of some kind to 'gently' tap the underside of the wrench to push the knob upwards and off. Sounded great, but mine was well and truly on and had to dremel it off. Good luck!!
