'86 Carrera alarm questions

I've owned my '86 for 3 years and it has the factory alarm with the key insert in the door jam. I'm yet to do anything with it (maybe out of fear?). How does it work? I assume simply inserting the key into it and turning it activates it but what sets it off and what happens when it goes off? Thanks.

The alarm control unit receives signals from both door interior light pin switches, the frt trunk pin switch and the ignition switch. If triggered the alarm horn will sound.
The engine will still crank with the starter but will not start due to the loss of the power signal at the alarm contact at the DME relay.

If you use it make sure you remove the key before you close the door or some really filthy words will come out of your mouth.
I have never made the mistake myself of forgetting to remove the key but had many customers over the years that did. I am sure someone can chime in that has experienced that pain

So after I activate it and the door opens the alarm goes off non stop until it's deactivated yes?

Alarm.

Yes, would also suggest a backup kill switch.

it does serve as a test - keeps a driver from operating the car unless they can find the Owner’s Manual, understand the instructions, find the key & it’s receptacle, deactivate the alarm... & then recall where they were going 20 minutes earlier.

Remember that the system allows/requires that, when active, you can open the door slightly, enough to insert the key without tripping the alarm, so you can turn it off before entering the car. Of course, if you open the car door too far before inserting the key, it will go off...

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing I'm going to leave it alone! Looks cool in the door jam, makes for good conversations, but no need to mess with it. Now if I could just figure out the damned ventilation system!!
