What is a narrow body?

I was told that NARROW bodies are up to 77, non turbos.

78 onward had flares.

Dude on FB says 964/993s also had narrow bodies and wide bodies. I don't buy it.

I see it like this:

Narrow = no flares (77 or earlier)
Normal/regular= 78 onwards, all 'regular 911s'
Wide = Turbo Flares, any gen

Who's right? As far as I was aware, narrow meant no flares whatsoever, which means pre 77.

folks frequently distinguish the "regular" non-turbo look and non-turbo 911s built after 1977 from their wide bodied brethren by referring to the former as "narrow bodies" and the latter as wide bodies = a comparative thing

So . . my vote goes for . . . we're all right (to an extent)

break the air cooled generations down into 3 parts
911/912/930
964
993

911/912/930
for MY 1964 thru 68
all these are the narrowest of the narrow
for MY 1969 thru 77 911/912
these got slight bulges in back

in '73 the 2/7 Carrera RS got 50mm/side wider rear, this is carried over into the later Carrrera 3.0(MY76/77) , SC(MY78-83) and Carrera 3.2(MY84-89)

the width of the n/b cars is 1610mm
the width of the SC/Carrera cars is cars was 1652mm

930 was introduced for MY '75 w/and additional 54mm extension on all 4 fenders
M491 cars got the same body
the width of 930/M491 is 1750mm

964 series
n/a fenders are essentially the same as SC/Carrra turbo versios are essentially the same as 930/M491

993
n/a are wider front and rear they fit right in between SC/Carrra and 930 width 1735mm
tt are wider only in back, width 1795mm

The 64-68 cars are the only true narrow bodies I suggest. The rest all have rolled out or extended rear wheel arch lips.

In general when people say Narrow body they are referring to all pre SC models.

Exactly a 964 is not a narrow body it has SC flares. You could say it is "Narrower" than the 964 tubro, but that is model specific and not how the term was started and or normally used.

Thats kind of splitting hairs.. A normal 964 is narrow compared to a 965 (964 turbo/widebody) but it's wider, due to the SC flares, then what is considered narrow body cars - pre 78. No one really calls the post '78 cars anything other than 'normal' vs wide body. So I suppose, you have 'narrow', 'normal' or 'standard' and 'wide body'.. .

Small addition of the 74/75 carreras to your list of cars getting the 50mm wider quarters
