Lower steering shaft support bearing.

Guys. The rubber bushing as pic, that locates on the lower steering shaft. Can anyone
advise as to whether the bearing locates directly into the rubber bush, or whether there is a metal sleeve it locates into first.
the bearing is long gone, but I have a metal sleeve without a home.
Cannot find a definitive answer.thanks.

the rubber bushing has the needle-bearing inside itself-it is one unit...

Hi thanks for that.So the bearing does not sit in a sleeve,It merely sits in the rubber bush?

Looks like the 914rubber version is two piece. I recall buying a Porsche replacement one years ago and it was one piece with integral needle bearing.

The bearing inside the donut is an 1117 I think, available from any bearing supplier. It's a needle bearing, uses the steering shaft as the inner race. Same bearing is used to support the pinion shaft inside the rack. You can just push a new one into the rubber donut. Or, better yet, make a teflon bushing... the area seems to be subject to corrosion, and the needle bearings don't seem to hold up all that well once the shaft gets pitted / worn.

Yes there’s a metal sleeve to contain the needle bearing. You’ll also want to consider installing some radial seals (similar to crankshaft oil seals) in the sleeve to keep the dirt out. Got mine from metricseals.com

You also can replace the rubber mount/vibration isolator with a soft yellow poly unit from Powerflex. I got mine from Pelican
