doing first brake pad replacement
77 targa with A and M calipers
started last night and got pins and spring out. The old pads were almost glued in and took some effort but success. Refurbished pins and spring plate and spread calipers and squeeze new pads in (old ones were almost 1/4 inch thinner..almost worn to the backing) Went to put back in...tight squeeze but success , installed redone pins and spring plate and tested by spinning disk and then apply brakes to reset caliper piston. spins but can feel the slightest resistance whhich i take as good. Now the questions there were no retaining clips as mentioned in many articles nor did i see any hole on the pin to insert? Normal or not? They are not listed as individual parts in any catalogue or in the PP parts lists...if anyone has the oem part number I would be appreciative, or can i use the same clips as used to hold the pins for the frunk hood struts? in the rotor holes I saw two "wire spring clips"...at first i thought dpo had put retaining clips ther to hold and forget but these are thicker. Any idea what they are? will do other 3 sides this weekend if pans go accordingly (ha ha) I do know looking at the condition of exterior gaskets that a full caliper rebuild is in the future but will tackle that when funds and time permit. (I wish PP had a clearing house in Canada!) thanks for any comments you can provide Bob |

On my 86 the pins have retainer springs in the form of an olive shaped split collet that grips the rotor holes.
Is that what you found? I have never know them to come off, they normally stay on the pins. You may want to think about piston seals rather a full caliper rebuild, especially if they were hard to push back. When you get it all back together and bled, stand on the pedal for a minute or two and check to see that the seals are tight.

interesting is that the fronts (a) dont use the clips, they have a small "crush" collar that holds the pins in place. Finished this weekend with some help from the forum. Used a brake lube on back of new pads and pins, re finished retaining spring plates and pins and painted calipers with porsche logo.
![]() ![]() Looked like original pads in there,,all crusty and some thick glue on their backs. Also quite worn down compared in thickness to new textars all in all, i learnt more about the car and enjoyed the time in the garage thanks to all for helping with newbie questions |
