Question What's the difference between a Targa top for an '84 and an '86?

Anyone know?

Hook latches became roller latches. Frame was thickened for later version. They are not interchangable if memory serves.

Exactly, I'm not sure of the year, but I know they changed from hook latches to latches like the cabs use.

I believe '86 was the changeover year - my '85 has hook latches

maybe I'm not clear on the difference between roller and hook latches.
Mine has latches like these - by hook I was referring to the 'hook' on the right side of the red unit:

Pelican describes the part as Targa Top Catch (sold per each, 2 required), 911 (1974-85)

If your 85 has roller latch I would be suspicious that someone didn't replace (Update) the windscreen frame with a 86 or later frame.

Not unless someone wanted the roller latch, I can't see someone going thru all that trouble unless it was in an accident (roll over).

86 was the official year for the switch to roller latch for the Targa. It was done so that the Cab and Targa would use the same windscreen frame.

So is it possible to remove the window hardware from an 86 car and mount the frame of an 85 or earlier car??? Then one could use the 86 top on an earlier car. Or do you need to switch the frame as well.

The frame is thicker according to John (second posts). You could probably mount a later frame to an earlier car, but it all welded in.

Just like you can put a speedster windshield frame on a Cab, but it's a lot of work.

They only went to the roller latch because the Cab went to a power top instead of a manual top and they wanted to use the same windscreen for the Cab and Targa.
