Backdating Heat: How to seal up this engine tin?
 

So I picked up a set of 'heat backdate' engine tin for the shroud, but honestly, they both fit like crap.

There is a gap on the bottom edge, I can see the cylinder fins. There's another gap near the alternator/fan shroud. And there's a gap between the sheet metal edge and the shroud itself. Would foam tape work? Would it hold up to high temps?

btw idk how the hell the driver's side is supposed to be compatible w carrera tensioners. I spent about 2.5 hours beating it with a hammer and tugging on it with pliers and using my vice/anvil to beat the metal so it doesn't just run right into the tensioner. It SORT of fits now.

Maybe photos would help us see what you're describing and/or a link to the vendor?

The drivers side is difficult to fit. The tensioner must actually be removed to easily fit it in. I don't recall beating on it with a hammer, only that it actually isn't designed for a midyear case necessarily. On my 75, a small spacer was required to fit between the lower tab and the engine block boss, as the heat back-date piece would not sit flush there. On my kit, I believe both pieces came with adhesive foam to fit between the fan side and the back-date pieces.

Idk what else to say. It isn't fitting great, I'm looking for ideas on how to seal it up. Foam tape might work, I just don't know what heat rating it has....

I had tons of problem with the heat backdate tin as well. The holes and shape just didn't quite line up. Lots of hammering and bending to get it on there correctly.

Yup. Problem is I had them powdercoated when the engine was apart.... so... trying to be gentle. I got them to fit 'okay', but there is still a gap, and there ALWAYS will be a gap on the bottom edge. Somebody has to have sealed this before, or know of a high temp weatherstripping.

I bought a set of aftermarket heat backdate tin and had the same situation. After a bunch of hammering and beating on them I gave up and sourced a set of OE ones on eBay and they fit perfect. The aftermarket ones went in the trash.

My driver side one still required a tiny bit of massaging to clear the 3.0L distributor, then I powdercoated them after verifying the fitment.

Gold heat tape may do the trick.

Dang, that must be so disappointing. I've been eyeballing the QSC set for a while now. But a $140 for ill fitting tinware is hard to justify. Are there no better copies available?

I got mine at Patrick Motorsports and they fit great !!!

I got the passenger side here on Pelican, and the hole was in the wrong spot for the shroud, and it isn't sealing along the bottom edge.
