Back dating heat
I just got done back dating my heat. Pulled out the $200+ heater blower motor along with the added duct work and all. Now I have a cleaner bay, cooler engine and more heat. So the question I have is why did the brain trust at Porsche change it? What was suppose to be accomplished? I'm told that one of the reasons is so when you're at a stop you get better heat because with the older system low rpm's mean less heat. Well, I don't sit still much and besides the heat is fantastic sitting still anyways. Has anybody back dated their heat and got the same results?
Tom

Mine worked fine in So Cal. A little week at idle, but it kicked in great when driving. Considering Germany gets cold I'm sure the market called for more heat at idle to make the car more consumer friendly.

The perfect combo I found is backdated exhaust w/ Carrera footwell blowers. Plenty of flow at high RPM's, and at idle the footwell blowers pul in the hot air making it still more than enough. I found no need for the main blower in the rear.

I backdated my 83 last winter. Plenty of heat for Louisiana, although it rarely gets below 30 degrees here. Love the clean, easy access. Also lost the A/C too. I rarely used it, so it had to go too.

Dittos! Ditched the A/C and back-dated heat. Never regretted it, either!

Backdating is the only way to get a late model car with SSI's to function and look good. So simple.

Can the backdated right side shroud duct fit behind the a/c compressor on an 87' Carrera?

CJ: Your question should be, "Can the AC fit with the backdate?"

I think that the A/C thing may be another reason for the goofy air handling system. My engine compartment had an A/C-ectomy and a blowerectomy last year. The engine compartment is at least fifty pounds lighter now, much better looking, and works better too.

One thing that most Americans do not realize is the amount of time Europeans sit in a stau (aka traffic jam). There is so much traffic and so few roads over there that they are clogged much of the time. Its not unknown to sit for hours waiting for an accident to be cleared or traffic to thin out.
I longed for a blower motor on my 72 while living in Germany. The moist weather and traffic jams made for windows fogged up much of the time. At idle the motor is just not putting out enough air to help. Here stateside its not anywhere as big a deal as we get traffic jams but do not sit for hours (sometimes days) like they do. Longest traffic jam I was ever in was 240 kilometers (almost 200 miles) on the autobahn going from Geneve to Frankfurt... people were stranded for days due to a series of accidents and ended up camping in the woods alongside the highway. Joe

Bill, if you are going to pull the 3.6 card . . . How about a nice RS heater system?
