Stupid question on CV grease.
Rebuilt my axles. After cleaning the cv joints I put a light coat of synthetic oil on them to prevent surface rust while waiting for grease to arrive. When I got the grease I just applied it to the CV joint. But I didn’t think to clean the oil off first. Hoping the oil doesn’t thin the grease out? Am I over thinking this?

no it is a very valid point .. instructions for cleaning CVs even indicate use warm soapy water as solvents can break down CV grease, even mixing differing greases can be an issue.
Although these are scientific facts, im not sure how much it would impact you practically however. id just go with it and listen carefully for strange noises.

If it was a light coating, any excess ran off while they sat. I wouldn't worry about that.

Not something you can find a whole lot of info on. I know when you buy new wheel bearings they come coated with an oil that’s all over the bag their wrapped in. I’ve never cleaned that oil off. I just pack new grease in there.

As syn and dino can be mixed without issue I doubt it will break the grease down in any manner worth any concern.....

On a related topic, new axles, 9 years sleeping, best new grease???
So, on a related topic, just before falling down the slippery slope, 9 years ago, i replaced the axles with our hosts new units. I recall hearing that it would be "WISE" to repack these units with new sticky synthetic grease.
Any greasy recommendations for fairly new Axles, "as long as i'm in there"????? I got to get this done before my "use by date" arrives:, brakes suspension, exhaust, complete fuel system upgrade, Lt clutch/FW, fuel lines tank, pump, shocks, recovered sport seats, max trans overhaul/upgrade, duck and air dam, PMO ITBs, Edis ignition,......somebody spank me.....(please)??? Anyway, I need a good greasy recommendation so i can continue with this endless, OCD restomod. thanks, chris |

Red Line CV-2 or Swepco 164.
For racing applications Red Line CV-2 or Neo HPCC #1.
