Exhaust heat shielding

Hi

Does anyone know how hot the exhaust pipes get on a 3.2l.
My 914 six conversion has speedo cable and throttle cable and clutch cable running quite near the exhaust header, and the cable plastic coatings are melting. I can't really move the cables much farther than a couple of inches away from the pipes. I have been looking at some high temp insulating tapes, and sleeves,
How would you go about decreasing the heat exposure to these cables.

Here is a link to one retailer, take a look at the products and share your ideas.

Thanks Mark

I had a mustang once that used to melt the cables routinely until the inner cable would pop out of the casing, usually during rush hour traffic. I finally wrapped the headers at that point with a header wrap. If the outer casing is plastic only, I would wrap everything icluding the cable itself, other wise your foot is going all of the way to the floor at the wrong moment.

I have a 2.7 "rs" engine w/factory heat exchangers. Using an IR heat gun, I've measured 400 deg. F at the pipe directly below the valve cover. The configuration of your exhaust system is different, but the temperature will increase the closer you are to the exhaust port. Yes, it does get quite hot - hot enought to melt and cook.

The products on that website should help insulate the individual cables. Themo-tec is another supplier of insulating products. I would not suggest any insulating wrap around the pipes as this usually leads to accelerated corrosion of the metal. However, Thermo-tec sells an insulating tube that slips over a section of exhaust pipe that might work in your application.
