1986 Porsche Carrera 911

Hi, My 1986 Porsche Targa 911 Carrera 3.2 is having problems. I can get it started and it idle fine but when I press the accelerator it will stall and will not run(starving for fuel)As soon as I try to rev the engine start to sputter. Replaced fuel filter and no change...could it be the DME relay under the seat? Thanks

Have you looked / checked for Vacuum leaks? I have Motronic systems in my small fleet of 8os BMWs and vacuum leaks can cause rough idle, hesitations, stalling, rough acceleration.

It could be a sensor - You can replace the DME relay with a new one - if it doesnt change, having a spare is a good thing.

Otherwise you have to begin with testing and ruling out the things that are working. Motronic will control the idle / advance and such through a few different sensors.

1st check your 3 el plugs on the left side of the engine.if they are plugged in
2nd take a picture of the engine and let us see it ..
3rd look for loose hose clamp where the air filter housing with AFM(air flow meter) meets the booth...

report back

Unfortunately, I have already retired and I do not use the car as I should. I'm going to work on the car cleaning it, doing a tune up, working on the upholstery and carpets. When it's ready, it's time to sell it and let someone else enjoy it ... it's not fair not to drive this beautiful car! It has only 75,000 miles and is all original.

There are many things that can cause those symptoms. Throwing parts at is is just expensive and may or may not fix it.

For sure, if the original 1986 DME relay is in place, replace it. It has a date stamped on the bottom. And replace it with a good relay, the solid state one is a good option. Some of the relays on the market are more junk than the one in the car now.

It really needs a Porsche pro to diagnosis the problem. Does it have a good spark, no vacuum leaks, and are the injectors firing properly. It might just be a weak coil, or it can be a 100 different things. Diagnose the issue, and repair the problem.

Thanks Glen, but the problem is fix....was the relay. But, as you probably know, if you don't drive these cars, the electronics "demons" will be very happy and start having mysterious issues.
