Cleaning motor while it’s out
Is it safe to clean the motor in this state? (Pic)
Obviously keeping the plugs in and sealing the intakes. Ide like to just spray some degreaser and scrub it and hose it off?? I don’t know. ![]()

Cover the distributor. Although, I prefer not to hose it off from the top. Scrub with wire brushes, towels, elbow grease. The bottom of the engine which you cannot get to right now is safe with spray and hose.

Yes. I sealed all the ports with rags and gorilla tape to cap off. Spray the insides with wd40 when done to be safe.
If you use purple degreaser be sure to spray with vinegar When done to neutralize. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Actually you shouldn't use a wire brush on the aluminum. It will leave marks and it cause contamination to the aluminum, deposit are often left in the marks and they rust, causing what looks lit pitting in the aluminum.
Use hard rubber or nylon bristle brushes with your cleaner.

I've always wondered if those steam cleaners would work?
Another product I've used is spray carb or brake cleaners and lots of rags. |

Begin the cleaning process with a warm engine.
Does it ever rain in your environment? If so, the engine is pretty water resistant to normal water spray as long as it isn't high pressure and directed at electrical harness connectors. In those electrical cases, wrap with plastic food wrap or baggies and tape. With the correct engine cleaner and a stiff parts brush/shortened paint brush and other kitchen-shaped brushes, followed by a gentle water spray should be enough to shed the offending gunk. Avoid using caustic liquids that could stain painted engine pieces. I've found that ATF is an effective degreaser that doesn't evaporate or run off surfaces like carb cleaner or other aerosol propellants. Removing the ATF film is then a simple matter of soapy water or equivalent. Sherwood |

Get yourself some different brushes and include a Parts Cleaning Brush which are very stiff and can get the hard deposits.
Never heard of using ATF fluid before. I'll have to give that a try.

I cleaned mine, that was equally grungy, on an engine stand with mineral spirits and a case of brake cleaner.
I bought a drip tray from Napa that prevented a big mess. I think this was after the first round of mineral spirits - ![]() Some of the stains on the case were more stubborn than I am. Clean enough to eat off of, but still discolored - ![]()

Harbor freight sell some good stuff when it comes to disposable ...
The steel/brass/nylon brush sets come from them . As did the box of cheap paint brushes The red plastic scraper was a set of 3 from amazon . The “pour” type goof-off was homedepot , all other aerosol chemicals amazon . Shop wipes are pretty amazing at cleaning almost anything . Blue workshop roll and latex gloves are dirt cheap at harbour freight . The bigger bristle brushes are at my local Ralphs store (next to the toilet cleaner brushes) If you can get CEC contact cleaner it’s the mutts nuts . IPA wipes and indeed ipa itself might be hard to find right now due to the pandemic , but are pretty great as a final cleaner or for cleaning delicate parts such as electronics As it evaporates . Buy the largest percent alcohol you can find . 5l pails of denatured alcohol e are good for rough stuff , I get mine from Home Depot . Painters plAstic roLl is a coupLe of dollars at Home Depot . I didn’t use it , as you can tell from the glimpses of my beautiful while floor tiles ... ( I use 409 and the green/white Ralphs handle brushes on that ) Painstakingly cleaning by hand is very therapeutic for most . I’d rather let chemicals do the work while I drink beer and smoke cigarettes. Bonus is , if you splash enough of it on , you can get high too [img]http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads26/CD534209_0A90_4C42_BFC8_AE17992159571607139807.jpg() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by ian c2; 12-04-2020 at 06:51 PM.. |

My engine was steam cleaned at one point and, either through fault of the machine or the operator, it built up a fair bit of aluminum oxide. Next time I have the engine out I'm going to give it a hand clean myself.
