Exclamation G50-Adjustment different than 915...Experiences?

I've just gone through a lot of threads and it seems that the G50 shifter is much different than the 915, as far as adjusting goes. The one thread that addressed this indicated that to adjust the shifting, the 3 screws that hold the shifter need to be loosened and the whole shifter moved. Nothing in the rear compartment needs to be adjusted.

OK, Anyone with experience care to get me started with the adjusting procedure. I'm clueless. If not, I'll just start adjusting blind this weekend.

Thanks.

Dave

I think there is only one adj. you can make on the G50 cars. It is at the shifter.

Dave -

I don't think there's any real adjustment on the G50 shifter - If it's not shifting smooth, then I'd first check the motor mounts. If these are worn then there will be great pressure on the shifter.

Next I'd check that the bushings in the shifter were still as new, and then I'd remove the panel on the floor in front of the rear seats and loosen the coupler, and the connection to the shifter rod coming out of the transmission (have to get under car to loosen this, it's a 13mm bolt under the boot.

Once you loosen everything, you can retighten it and it will re-settle where it shouldn't bind.

Don't overtighten the rubber coupling thingy, it needs some play in it.

Chuck,
Already replaced the motor mounts and shifter bushings. I think when I did the bushings I moved the shifter from where it was. There is some play with the 3 screws. I'll try that and then get under the car and try the shifter rod.

Thanks...I was getting confused as all of the posts were for 915 transmissions.

Regards,
Dave

The correct adj. is to put it in 4th gear and insert a 5mm drill between the housing and the ball thingie. That is the only adj.

Your welcome Dave. It is pretty clear where to stick the drill when you get it apart. I think the drill goes between the thing with the bolt that holds the shift rod and the housing

Dean,
I made the change and had to move the housing back alot. Just came back from a test drive and it made a big difference.

I don't know why...but it did
Thanks again.

Hey Dave,

Yer welcome.

Where does your clutch engage? On my conversion it engages about 1/2 way, much higher than the 915 setup

TIA

Dean,
I'd say mine engages about the same. Before I got the '87 I drove an 85 and the difference to me was the tranny & clutch.

I like the g50 much better. I had a 73 911T around 1980 and from what I remember it caught way down by the floor boards. Maybe I just didn't have it adjusted right.

Dave
