Porsche mechanic near New Brunswick, NJ
Hi,
Can anybody recommend a good mechanic for air cooled cars. Im trying to find a shop somewhere between, say, Newark to New Brunswick? I have found Jay Coates - The Popular Mechanic. Anybody know him? Any other recommendations? Thanks. |

The Popular Mechanic is in Summit NJ and I believe works mostly on water cooled cars. I have no direct experience but a good friend brought him a water cooled car for routine brake work and let’s say the bill was eye watering. Not a pleasant experience. In Rockaway NJ about 5-10 mins longer drive than Summit is Powertech and they do good work on aircooled cars and are very active in NNJR PCA at DE events tracking both water & aircooled cars. I use their shop for alignment and corner balancing my track car. Keith Peare is a great mechanic, good guy and very quick on the track. I learn a lot every time I stop by.
Gasworks Garage in Paramus gets rave reviews for aircooled work but I have not used them. What do you need done? And a another vote for Dawe's Motorsport with an exceptional reputation. Really depends what type of work you need and how willing you are to travel for more routine needs.

I use Dawe’s Motorsport in Stroudsburg PA. I’m next to East Brunswick, so it’s 1.5 hrs away. It should be a little less for you if you’re in New Brunswick.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions guys. (I've been out of touch for a while)
Here's my situation / problem: I'm interested in a car that is, coincidently, located not terribly far from Powertech (I’ve known of them). I am assuming at this point that this car will need a fair amount of rebuilding. But I've yet to physically check it out myself, and I certainly have not had anybody do a PPI on it. And that is something else I would like to try and arrange. But I don't know if that will even be possible. I live in NYC, and travel (train) with some frequency to New Brunswick NJ. I thought if I could find a good shop that is somewhat close to one of the NJT train lines, it would make things a lot easier for me. This car would mostly be garaged in New Brunswick when not in the shop, and I would be able to drive it from New Brunswick to the shop, and then catch the train back to NYC. And then vice versa on the return. I figure this would be a general, ongoing kind of thing for a good while as the car gets sorted out. So, Powertech is not out of the realm. Dawe's is just way too far. I don't know… I really don't know if this game plan could really work out. I may have to just find a good shop wherever I can, and then truck or otherwise deliver the car there until all work completed, and then just pick it up all in one shot. Anyways… just one more call out for anymore suggestions or recommendations. Thanks to all. |

I have used Powertech in the past and was not happy with them.
You could try Chris at New Palumbos, I use him for most of my cars and have been going to him for over 10 years. Both him and his sons are active racers, and he is familiar with air cooled Porsches. His shop is in Milburn, which is right on the train line. If you want any further info feel free to PM me. |

check NNJR PCA supporters? https://nnjr-pca.com/supporters/
NJ Transit Morris/Essex line runs out to Dover - not far from Rockaway - just saying. If you were considering PowerTech. Montclair/Boonton line could work too. What is the car in particular? What's the condition - driveable? rusty? share some pics?

PPI's are pretty standard fare. I've had a long relationship with Gaswerks in Paramus and while their repair bills can also be "eye watering", I'd certainly feel very comfortable having them do a PPI. Basically all they do are air cooled cars. Good, solid, desirable air cooled 911's have history, documentation and responsible owners. They also command prices accordingly. You want one that has nothing to hide and ideally, needs nothing, unless you have nothing but time and money on your hands. Good luck. Nick
