CV Joint Guru's... need advice.

Removed my drive shafts today, fairly simple procedure using 101 Projects as a guide. Just to do a level set, I have an 85 930 Turbo.

Let me first state that the PO or his mechanic was a real POS. The more things I take apart on this car the more frightened I become.

With that said this is what I discovered: Besides the ripped outer boot I also discovered a missing outer dust cap (see photo)! Needless to say with a missing dust cap and ripped boot I plan to replace this CV joint. The other boots and CV joints looked good, so I will just clean, repack and put new boots on.

Now for a few questions:

1) In 85 did Porsche stop using CV Joint gaskets and simply switch to the outer dust caps? These caps are on both ends of my drive shafts. I’ve found PET to be quite confusing in this area and don’t have a copy of the factory service manual to reference. If anyone could help me with a breakdown of the CV joint parts used on the 85 turbo’s, I would greatly appreciate it.

2) Any special precautions I should take when re-packing the CV joints?

3) Does anyone make a CV boot that isn’t prone to ripping?

4) What’s better, 12-point or 6-point bolts? The ones I removed where only the standard allen-head 6-point type. I know the factory uses 12-points.

Hi,
I have the same half shafts on my car and just have rebuilt a few joints. Not to worry, when you get the boot kit you will get the grease, end cap, boot and pull ties for the boot. If you are doing the inner boot, do the outer while you are at it. Cheap $12 insurance. I always completely clean out the joint and then repack with new grease. When you get the joint off of the shaft just dont let it come apart, it is a pain the first time to reassemble. Lay it flat on wax paper to repack and it'll be easier. I think that the boot kits i got from pelican last time were Lobro brand so that is a plus. Any boot is going to rip eventually, try not to get any kind of cleaner on them, it will dry out the rubber. I stayed with allen head bolt, most people say to replace when you rebuild.

Did your boot kit include the outer dust cap? The dust cap I’m referring to is the item with the red arrow pointing to it in photo #2(right side)?

Also, did you use any gaskets anywhere or are they no longer required?

Thanks!

Yes, the kit comes with the end cap, and no you dont need any gaskets.

Garage
Also, FWIW, I just ordered some new "factory" CV joint bolts and they are standard 12.9 socket head cap screws. No fancy 12-point bolts.

Paul,

I can't find the boot kit you are referring to in the Pelican parts catalog. Any chance you have a part number or a link? I’ll try calling Pelican when they open this morning. I just want to make sure I get the right kit.

Thanks
