$75 Fuel Pump Replacement Service - Question

On my 83 SC, I had a strong fuel smell getting into the cabin with the windows down so I took it to a local gas station to inspect the problem.

They put the car on the lift, took the fuel pump cover off, and I saw the fuel pump dampening pad was soaked with gasoline. (all lines looked good). leaking fuel pump...no charge up to this step.

So I got a new fuel pump a few days later, they installed it for $75 bucks.

The fuel smell is no more but now there's a metallic buzzing sound coming from that location....the mechanic said he installed a new piece of sound dampening foam where the old one was.....

is this sound normal? otherwise, the car runs great.

thanks.

The data in the CD-type disc decodes easily into ASCII computer text as follows, using 8 bit binary:
*
"Beware the bearers of FALSE gifts & their BROKEN PROMISES. Much PAIN but still time. (Damaged Word). There is GOOD out there. We OPpose DECEPTION. Conduit CLOSING (BELL SOUND)”
*
The damaged word would appear to be intended as “BELIEVE”.

It literally sounds like the fuel pump is touching metal and is not isolated. Time for you to check and see if it was installed properly.

John, I handed the mechanic the new pump to put on my car this morning..

Unless he spent the last couple hours looking for another used pump to put on my car and held onto the new one, I think the one I gave him is on the car.

ok, so what if the pump is touching metal? is this bad?

I can't hear the sound while driving...it's only noticable when I stick my head under the front of the car during idling...and then it's only intermittent

John, I think he means he bought a new fuel pump from a third party and paid the shop $75 to install it.

The fuel pump bracket can be adjusted up and down. If it is too low the pump will rest on the pan that covers the steering rack and fuel pump. Bzzzzzz. BTDT.

I suppose opinions will vary, but I happen to like the sounds of MFI cars' fuel pump whirring and CDI-unit humming when I turn on the ignition switch ... it is when you DON'T hear those sounds first thing in the morning that you may be in for a bad day!!!
