911R Oil Tank Hole

Hello.

In the midst of a fair amount of bodywork on a 1968 912 turning into my version of a 911R clone--which I am calling a 911c.

I am curious how folks have executed getting the oil tank hole in the car with the nice return on it.

I've heard things like:
  1. Popping the hole in and fabricating the return with welding rod or similar
  2. Make the hole and return off the car and then welding that on
  3. I've seen one picture where it looks like someone made a tool that looks like a punch and flare tool set (https://www.mittlerbros.com/4-punch-flare-tool.html)

Any suggestions? Anyone have any experience with this?

I have a 72. I took measurements off of it and transferred them to a 78 track car. I made bucks and dies out of wood with an edge radius that I wanted, cut a hole in the quarter leaving 1 1/4''around the circumferrance of the hole to work with. I heated the metal, held the female buck in place while I rolled the edges down. Getting that right is the hard part. The insides of the cavity and hinge bracket less of a task. Can send pics of the templets and bucks if you like. Will need a lid or fashion one from 1/8'' aluminum, soft alloy. Getting its axis correct on the quarter is critical.

I just realized we may be have two different conditions here. I copied mine from a 72. Not sure what an R is in the regard of the oil door. They appear to be different.

Then you just need a pencil type tool with a slot in it to bend a lip. Use some plyers to crimp it smooth all around.
