Unhappy My New Muffler - Don't Fit!!

Hi All,

I Picked up this muffler from a swap meet yesterday, it's a Cargraphic (Model Car4) and very nice quality bit of kit:

The vendor assured me that it would fit my SSI shod SC. Tried a test fit this afternoon and it turns out that the tailpipes need to be about 4cm lower to clear the rear bumper (I've removed the rear valance). Here are some pics:

I assuming that it's actually a special exhaust designed to be used in conjuction with a Cargraphic body kit.

I'm guessing that it wouldn't be a huge job to get a muffler shop to remove the outlets and angle them down a bit to get the clearance I need? I was also thinking of getting them to extend each outlet outwards about an inch or so to center them properly.

What do you guys think, is this feasable? Also, what do you think of the look? I think it looks badass!

Cheers

PS: Note to Jakes, Brian, Nick etc - Please dont laugh!!

Yep, a muffler shop should be able to angle the outlets down, but will that give you the clearance without actually moving the complete outlet holes lower on the muffler?

Tim: I'm not sure what you mean? They look like they clear fine. The right side dips a little bit, but that seems like a "fit" problem. Is that what you mean? I'm not sure.

They look good otherwise.

Guys, the muffler is not bolted up in the pictures, it's just jacked up under the car, I need it to go up another 3-4CM before I can bolt it up to my SSI's

Cheers

Custom muffler shop can do this for you (they can do some amazing things). If you don't have to have those tips running straight out then as you say you are in good shape to have the shop put in nicely bent items that will not block flow.

And I guess I have to say you ought to remove those tips anyways in favor of flat black tips. What you have there does not fit at all with the black trim on your car and is a bit poseur for my tastes anyways (what the heck do I know?).

Tim,

Meaty!, I'd go to a muff shop with a case of beer and see if one of the guys will cut them and add a downward piece....

Amber lubricant...

Does the muffler have any identification on it e.g. numbers stamped into the metal or similar? It's probably for an early car. What size are the tailpipes? They look like 100mm/4 inches?

I'm in the process of finding the right muffler for my new set of SSI's. Today I drove a 3,2 with SSI's and an early stock 1 out muffler in regular steel with a custom tail pipe. I'm glad I did. Awesome sound. Lovely deep, but with an aggressive raspy metal like sound to it. This muffler didn't fit on a 3,2 either. At least not until the custom tail pipe was installed.

John - Remove the tips, you must be joking!!!

Mikkel, it's a Cargraphic muffler and yes they are 4 inch outlets. It has an ID plate tacked on the underside just has 'Car 4' etched on it. I'm convinced that this must be a custom exhaust that was meant to fit with a Cargraphic body kit.

I'll post some sound files when I eventually get it bolted up

Cheers

If you're asking for opinions, here's mine: those things are too big.

If it were me, I'd have the muffler shop install smaller (and possibly even black) tips.

I think the tips are too large too. Maybe if you had 5 liters of displacement...

That has got to be the ugliest tip configuration I've ever seen at the rear end of a Porsche, or any car for that matter.

Hmmm, is there any chance that is a muffler for a C2/4? I dunno about those tips, though. Although, who am I to talk, folks have called my twin pipe sport muffler 'rice', 'VW', etc. Who cares....I love it

Tim:

At the risk of offending, a pcar owner never stuffs a sock down their pants unless it won't fit.

I suppose if it were a coupe, or a Turbo, or had a 3.6 conversion you'd have a reason to advertise.

Ouch, what a bummer

Don't worry, I am biting my lips hard so that I don't laugh

If I was you I would remove the rear bumper, and bolt it on, go for a test drive and see if you like the sound, have your wife blast it up and down a quiet road and you can see if you like it. That should save you the case of beer, in case you don't. But if you do, then I think a muffler shop should be able to cope with that.

Cheers Jakes

Didn't get as far as firing her up yesterday but I'm going to mount it upside down tonight just to test the noise!!

I'm going to see a stainless steel welder tomorrow and have decided that I'm going to get them to remove the tips as well just to see if it looks better.

Cheers
