Porsche 911 normal oil consumption

Hello,

New potential 911 enthusiast here. I have been reading about the various 911 engines and read that a healthy 911 engine 2.7 - 3.0 or earlier models consumes 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles? That seems like a lot to me. Did I understand this right?

Thanks in advance, Brian

Porsche lists the worst case scenario in all of their old AC manuals...actually more than 1 qt per 1k.
However, unless you are racing or have some wear in the upper engine (valve guides/rings) you won't see that.
I have 47 k miles on a top end rebuild and use about 10 oz. in 3k (my oil change number)...mine is on the low use side def but many get good numbers.
At 500/600 miles per quart it is about top end rebuild time....so, check the car you are looking at and inquire....altho most never know the consumption until they own as they can run wonderfully even with that usage.

Some of the consumption levels is a matter of RPM.

I take long road trips of 900 mile days in my 85 Carrera. With the stock 5th gear the RPMs can be 3,600 RPM at highway speeds. I replaced my 5th gear with a taller ratio gear and now at 75 MPH is am at 3,100 RPM. I can get about 2,000 miles per quart but I had a complete rebuild a few years back. A day a the track with mostly wide open throttle will eat a quart in under 1,000 miles.

The system has a ton of oil, about 3 gallons total, check the level with the engine fully warmed up, at idle for 60 seconds on level ground. Get the level right between the high a low marks. Do not fill it to the top mark, or it will suck up that extra quart in 400 or 500 miles.

Welcome to the 911 madness. It is a great car.

As GH85 stated....welcome to the madness!!

This is really such an ambiguous question bc like GH said the usage has soo many influencing factors.

My OG 3.0 in good health but high mileage (164k) used a qt every 1000mi.

My newly rebuilt 3.0 Euro motor that sees redline on a constant basis, used .15 qt in 2200 miles this season.

My theory is that unless you're making smoke clouds or fouling plugs, enjoy it for what it is.

My 85 Carrera manual says that oil usage is normal in our cars. It did not say how much. It said it depends on all the stuff mentioned up above. All I know is a top end changed my oil use . I went from 400-500 miles to need a quart to over 1500 just to top up a bit.

Mine is about a qt/1500 and most of that is likely the cloud at startup. No leaks. If you are using more than that youve probably got stuck rings or super worn valve guides.
