Carbon Fiber Engine Cover/Decklid?

Considering ways to lighten the Rot Rod for the coming AutoX season......

A properly made carbon decklid should weigh practically nothing. Anyone know of a good supplier and know what the actual weight is?

The subject.....

Something to consider,
a bare SC/Carrera steel engine lid weighs ~9# and has a short lever arm compared to the front lid, I don't have the weight of the front handy but it's certainly >9#, that's the first place to lose weight after the bumpers of course

Carpoint in Germany sell a decklid that weighs around 1 kilo according to them, haven't seen it in person though so don't know how well it fits.

Dude, I can't believe your front tires don't rub. If they don't, great. At any rate, lighter body panels should raise the ride height a bit.

I don't know the exact # but you would be surprised at the difference between stock deck lid/door/hood/fender when compared to steel..

I remember vividly when I received A carbon RSR rear bumper from MA Shaw.. the box was so light I thought.. did they ship me an empty box?

One of my cars weighs 1850# with 180# of sandbags in the drivers seat while on the scales, granted it started life at a whopping 2254# per BOL or reg..And it has an FIA cage

One thing to consider though.... if your want the new composite piece color matched to your car Probably $1.5k

I'm finding I like the way it handles with an extra few gallons of gas in the tank, so I'm going to go after weight in the rear first. Car is already down to 2335 with 1/4 tank. I put an aluminum lid on my "Project Heavy Metal" (Tongue in cheek) and it was 4 lbs 11 oz I think - so if I could save 6 or 7 pounds there, and maybe 911R lights and a composite bumper......

If you can find a prepreg carbon decklid, that will give you the lightness you are after Jon. If wet layup, a carbon decklid probably won't be much lighter than glass due to all the resin which is heavy vs the fabric. But then you a talking a lot of dollars for less molecules.

Not related to your quest for a decklid, how much auto-x goes on up your way (ignoring covid).

Aluminum at 4 lbs is gettin pretty dang light.

I saw this early lid in a posting on Pelican awhile back but no one knew who made it.
Always liked the looks of it, especially in the raw state with clear coat for a hot rod project.

Here's that Carpoint carbon deck lid.
Pics aren't great on line.
They say 1100 grams which is right at 2.4 pounds all for 920 Euro plus shipping.
Losing weight ain't cheap sometimes.

Nothing weighs less than nothing. Just remove it for the autocross.

One project I've always wanted to do and almost certainly never will is delete the decklid hinges all together. My plan is to affix targa top style pins facing forward under the lid and receiving holes where the hinges would be in the engine bay. So you push the pins into the holes and then press down on the plunger.

This allows you to take the decklid off quickly and easily any time you want.

That's a great find.

Actually it's 736 euros without VAT but the shipping is a killer: 136 euros for that.

Still, at 1100 grams it's got to be a properly made carbon fiber part, not a poseur item like some.

At 1100 grams that cf lid would blow away pretty easily!!! LOL. Nice problem to have. You could also make some very light hinges if they didn't have to hold up much.
