So I am driving along at 60mph and wham, wham de wham wham!!!!

I am driving on a straight at 60 mph and hit a small break in the pavement with a tiny bump and all hell brakes loose.....sounds like the throttle stuck in neutral, blown engine or the car was tearing itself apart, wasn't sure what it was. It was LOUD and it scared the bg out of me!

I pull over asap in the next 50 yards.

Tranny seems fine, new brakes seem fine. Sounds like a rock is stuck in the rear wheel, clonk, clonk clonk. And the car is feels like it has a bad flat, "kathump, kathump, kathump". I stop, listen, look and move ahead a bit and back up a bit. Car then seems to lockup like the emergency brake is set hard on then things seem to free up in reverse. I drive another 1/4 mile in second at 20 mph and no noise, no clunking and no, "kathump, kathump", that sounds like I am driving over speed bumps on the right rear side. Nothing obvious under the car. Clonking starts again and I get a flat bed tow into town.

Nothing obvious that I can see. I do remember a right hand CV boot being replaced several months ago. I was a little pissed then because I would have never had the boot replaced but the entire set of CV joints and axles on a 190K mile car replaced instead, if I had been asked and in town when the work was done. When i questioned the shop they said something to the effect, "No big deal, wait till they go bad and then repalce them." If this is a CV joint that was a truely stupid idea.

Any idea on what I am hearing and feeling? Care to make an educated guess from my poor description?

Certainly sounds like a CV joint to me!

Cheers

Sounds like a CV joint either pulled loose or came apart.

Like Tim and Jack said, time for a new CV joint. I would just go ahead and replace both sides now.
