More CV Joint Mayhem! Assistance Needed.
Well this is pretty typical, my $50 CV Boot weekend service project on my 85 930 has gotten out of control. Once again I have the PO to thank for his lack of TLC. It would appear that he never serviced or properly serviced the CV joints.
The pictures below depict the problems I encountered on three of the CV joints. Some pretty bad wear and scoring. I have two questions: I ordered four CV boot kits from our sponsor but they don’t include the inner flange. My inner flanges are pretty mangled and I would like to replace these during the rebuild process. This is the flange that the actual CV boot attaches to (part#9 in the diagram below). I attempted to order just the flange but they are a special order and ridiculously overpriced. I was wondering if anyone has any new old stock of these flanges lying around? If so, please send me an PM or email. Secondly, while looking at the PET catalog I discovered a concave washer (part# 6) that I didn’t find when I pulled my CV joints apart. Does the 85 930 utilize this part? Thanks for the help. ![]()

TR,
If three of your CV's look like the first two pics ... they definitely need to be replaced! Thus, if you can find one good flange out of the four ... you are all set to replace the boot on the one good remaining used CV.

tap the flange onto the outer race to hold it steady, and find a pipe or large socket that fits snug inside the flange. and then reshape it back to normal by tapping the lip around the outside with a small hammer. pretty much standard procedure, as they're all like that.

Warren,
I have four new CV joints ready to install. Unfortunately they didn't come with the elusive inner flange either. John, Thanks for the advice, I'll give that a try tomorrow. Any thoughts on the concave washer? Last edited by TurboRuf; 05-03-2003 at 07:49 PM.. |

I have good flanges from an 81sc "thats a long sad story". If they will fit you are welcome to them but I think they are too small.

mussberger,
Thank you for the generous offer! I just checked the PET catalog and I was disappointed to see that they are different. The part# I need is: 928 332 097 00. Update: I made another discovery today that really blew my mind. I removed the old flanges from all four CV joints today. I thought something looked fishy with one of the joints, so I decided to set them side by side. I discovered that one joint was actually 1/4" thinner! It turns out it's a 911 joint and not a 930! I am simply amazed at the stupidity of the PO or his mechanic. It makes me sick to think someone would do this to a Porsche. Well I’m glad I decided to service them after all. I still need to find out if I need the concave washer and what its purpose is. Last edited by TurboRuf; 05-03-2003 at 07:47 PM.. |

930 axles are a different animal. Educate yourself on this resource and buy the "Porsche" parts guide from PP and ask lots of questions. There is a tech article that explains the changes.

I actually have a parts guide, just didn’t' think of looking through it.
I always tend to go right to the PET catalog. Unfortunately the copy I have doesn't cover Euro 930's, so I still can't figure out if the washer is needed. It does have a good CV write-up on the differences between the various model years. I was just hoping somebody had some hands-on experience with the 930 CV’s for a quick answer.
