'87 Cabriolet Top Problems

For the life of me, I cannot get my (new to me) cab top to get close enough to the frame to trigger the lock motors.
  • I have tried loosening the giant nut on the main lifter bars until they were completely loose, and then I tried pushing down from the top and pulling down from inside the car.
  • I have tried sliding the adjusters (two nuts below lifting mechanism, both sides) all the way forward and all the way back.
  • I have tried adjusting the threaded adjuster (below lifting mechanism, both sides) all the way up and all the way down.

All motors work fine, but I cannot get the top to go forward enough. The locking bolts are close enough to make some contact with the metal catch piece, but it is not enough to push the lock motor triggers far enough in to trip the switch. Any thoughts on what else can be adjusted? Is the fabric just too tight?
