Quote back on my 915 Rebuild, any questions I should be asking?

Hey, so I dropped off my 915 at a reputable shop last week. They got back to me today,
here's what they found: Apparently 2nd was pretty bad, missing a lot of teeth, 3rd was pretty worn too.

Seems pretty legit, just asking what questions I should be asking; what brand of bearings should they be, what brand of gearsets, anything else that I should be replacing while they are in here?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

You got off light.

Only some syncros, some dog teeth, some bearings. Decent prices for labor, and they make a little money on parts.

Yeah, not too concerned, just wondering if there's anything missing or extra, and if I should specify certain brands. For wheel bearings I always go Timken, but trans stuff is all new to me. $260 on a bearing made my eyes pop out, but that's what the internet says they cost. Kind of boggles my mine that a bearing could be that expensive...

Not unreasonable.

The bearings are expensive, with no options.

Just did mine. Add in the cost of repairing loose bearing races.

My 915 is currently being rebuilt. I was quoted much more. But my gearbox needed everything including a new clutch

There are three bearings per shaft. I only saw two for each shaft. Did I miss them?

Yeah, was wondering about that. 2nd gear was def bad, so I would think the 1/2 shift sleeve would be replaced with it.

Is a slider the same thing as a shift sleeve? I'm green to trans internal stuff, if someone had a super basic ELI5 version of a 915 exploded view with NAMES instead of part numbers I would be eternally grateful.

No idea, researching now. Also reading something about brake bands, being cheap while you're in there?

If none of your gears were making noise, then those are good to be reused.

I would think there is a possibility that you may need one or more sets of needle bearings, those can fall apart. Not expensive, but I am sure they will inspect them.

There is a possibility that your bearings are loose in the case, which if so, will require it to be sent out to be machined. Again not a great expense, but will take some time.

I would recommend a one piece bearing retainer. But there may be some debate on the necessity of that upgrade, especially if it is a strictly street driven car.

Ask if they are going to check if the ring gear is in spec on preload and backlash. I'm not sure if it is needed after replacing the diff carrier bearings. I think most pros will look at the ring and pinion and determine if an adjustment is needed or not.

Thank you for your input. 2nd was crunchy sometimes. That's all I remember. No pop outs. They said the case looked pretty good and would not be needing send out for machine work, esp. since it's a street car not a race car.

Looks like a preliminary estimate. Any additional repairs "deemed necessary" will increase it.

Good luck and please update us with the total cost.

They have the trans apart right now, this is the estimate right now. Wondering if I need the 1-2 slider, I read that if you replace a gear it also needs a new slider. What I don't get is that they said 1st looked okay, so would you get a 1-2 slider and it would be okay with the original/worn 1st gear? Or woudl I need to do that gear too?

This is a budget build, not a high horsepower build.

If you broke gear teeth on 2nd, I’d think a new 1-2 slider would make sense.

The bands and blocks are reused unless damaged. Very unlikely.

My bearing races walked out of the case(s). Repair of that, plus rebuild plus LSD was $6200. And, mine was a budget build also. 915 costs add up pretty fast.

They sure do add up fast!
Makes you wonder when you see a "freshly rebuilt" 915 for sale for only a few k.

915 rebuild

10 hours is a bit rich for a freshening.I used to do many gearboxes for local shops. They would remove the package and pressure wash the trans.I offered a 2-3 day turnaround.I charged 4 hours for repair.Add 1 hour for differential carrier bearing replacement to set up backlash & drag.Bearing quality makes a difference. For carrier bearings Timken were set for drag at 25 in.lbs where SKF were set at 35 in.lbs.Ring gear needs to be held firmly to prevent rocking and pinion wear.Fred

You were underselling yourself. Industry standard is 8-12 hours.

OP, Timken makes good bearings, but so do FAG and SKF, the usual suppliers of German bearings.

I too would add a 1-2 slider to the job. And one of my 1 piece beating plates. The cheaper ones aren’t heat treated like mine.
