The rockers may be ok but it’s the beginning of the end for the cam.
I’m doing the same on my Carrera. Mine looked like that about 5k miles ago. It’s about twice as bad now along with another lobe beginning to pit.

Cams can be welded and reground. The question is - is it worth it to have that done versus purchasing a good used cam, or a new billet ground cam? Should be plenty of 3.0/3.2 cams (same specs) used out there from guys who wanted a hotter cam in their engine.

Mine looked like that. Could be a clogged spray bar now or sometime in the cars life.
I took my cams and rockers to Elgin, you can ship them too, refinished the rockers with new bushings and re-ground the cams to a “Sport” grind. Whole thing was like $1,200. Elgincamsdotcom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Castrol GTX 20W-50. Is it too think for the oil sprayer? I hit the sprayers with some parts cleaner and they worked well. It could have clogged at some point but seemed ok on disassembly.

+1 to shadowjack's recommendation of a regrind. Mine are boxed and about to be sent out.
Luckily we have several options including Web Cam and Daugherty Racing Cams.

20/50 is the recommended viscosity for oil along while the correct additives for flat tappet systems. Not to turn this into another oil thread, I use VR1 Valvoline racing. Other recommend oil that sees a lot of diesel engines.

Interesting, had similar pitting on my 3.2 cams when I did a top end for excessive oil consumption at 80k. I'd used Castrol GTX 20/50 consistently up to that point.
Had cams welded and reground (and rockers refinished) and switched oil after top end (Mobil 1 and later Brad Penn 15/50) - recently (and over 100k miles later) had engine apart to upgrade to 3.4l and cams/rockers were perfect. Correlation/Causation/etc. who knows? |

I used Daugherty. Reground to 964 specs. Mine were pitted much worse then yours.
Tom: Lets get together for a beer half way between Slidell and Hburg

FOR Sure but I'm in NOLA at least a couple times a month. Let's get together in Slidell.

If I have them reground to 964 specs do I need to do anything else and does anyone have a ballpark price on that service?

Just picked up a nice pair in the classifieds so I guess that is direction I'm going for now. Thanks for all of the help!

Going forward, if it was me, I would go with Mobil 1 20W-50 or Driven GP-1 20W-50 (or 15W-40). VR-1 and Brad Penn no longer have the additive pack that made them so good.
