Tachometer stopped working. ??? 1985 porsche 911

Has anyone attempted rebuilding a Tachometer with success? ... sounds scary!

If so, difficulty 1-5?

Where would I purchase replacement parts?

any idea what caused your tach to die? When mine died many years ago (during the very beginning of my ownership), it was a casualty of an undiagnosed voltage regulator failure that manifest itself in occasional voltage spikes from the alternator that manifest itself through the occasional "dimming" of instrument and headlights (I was really seeing the lights go back to normal after a very bright transient caused by the spike. The voltage spikes also a) created what I know know as a sulphur aroma from the boiling battery, b) fried a component of my DME computer, and c) knocked out part of my radio's display.

I ended up sending my tach to North Hollywood for repair (they did a great job and it's still working fine 25+ years later) so can't help you with repair advice. Do, however, suggest that you find cause of failure so it doesn't happen again.

If you are handy and know how to solder, do this:

The 3.2 tachs are pretty complicated because they have all the components to control the shift light. Bob Ashlock's tach board is a great solution if you're comfortable soldering and no longer care about the shift light. I've repaired a couple 3.2 tachs but it takes a while to diagnose the issue and the replacement components are not all available.

Probably just a bad connection on one of the wires. That's excellent!
