Best Early Key Blank?

Guys,

I need a better, stronger, tougher key for my 1967 Porsche coupe, the last few keys I have had broke on me! AUGHHHH!

Does anyone recommend a better key blank for the early cars?

Many of the locksmiths have an all metal key. It is rather ugly, but sturdy.

Buy a key blank from the dealer and it is good for many years. I had the same type of key of the my 914. I got about 10 years of use out of a key used as my daily driver, and only car. The 914 key was brass for the metal part and really soft. I would wear those down in about the time the plastic part broke.

My 911 key has been in my pocket or the ignition of my 911 for 26 years now and shows little to no wear on the metal part. The plastic part is worn down enough the words Porsche don't show up anymore. It is the factory key the car came with so 36 years old and 177,000 miles of use.

Best thing is to have a two part key ring. Disconnect the P-car key and keep the rest in the center console or pocket. Less stress on the key and ignition switch.

A removable key is best. I didn’t like them dangling on my leg. To be honest I wanted to see if I could successfully upload a photo.

Making your keys last longer

Brian,

rebuild - that is remove and clean all the junk in the key lock tumbler of your door handle. The pot metal has started to wear down the rub strips and that gunk makes the turning of the lock harder. you are stressing the key each time you lock and unlock the doors. After 32 years with my 65 I got to know my key shop for annual remakes. Finally cleaned the door locks and properly lubricated the locks, last key was 7 years old when it moved to the new owner.

A lot of guys have stories of the key breaking off in the door or ignition, neither is a fun experience. When the locks are working properly it has hardly any stress - except if you have a jailers ring weighing 5 lbs. hanging from it.

I have a 68S. 4 or 5 years ago I went to my local Ace Hardware Store and had 2 keys cut. The guy knew about Porsche cars and used a Taylor P79B key. $2 each. They work Great.
