'72 to '95 993 Conversion Help
Before I begin, please do NOT post any gripes as response to this email. HOWEVER, I will supply my email address so people may provide input with regard to bad & good experiences.
So here it goes: I need to select somebody who could help me with the transplant of a 1995 993 engine into a 1972 911T shell. So far, I know of Steve Timmins Patrick Motorsports (?) Anybody else out there who specializes in conversion? I already know of Mr. Timmins. I have yet to access/talk with Patrick M. Anybody else out there I could choose from? For those with bad and/or good feedback but do not want to be public about it, please respond to: My email address is windsorj@pacbell.net. Thank you! DMX,
Where have you been? This is the latest craze! It's OK about your feedback as it looks like you're a newbie based on your number of posts. My humble suggestion to you is.....'think/research before posting.' Without this discipline and conrol, you might get attack by others. Good luck to you. |

You may be asking more than one question.
Where to get a motor? Harald Julicher. Where would I get the work done? If I had to do it all over again, I would trailer my car to TRE Motorsports. Consider the following: 1) Adequate cooling. (Search the archives) Don't underestimate cooling needs. 2) Consider multiple exhaust options. 3) The Patrick motorsports 3.6 conversion throttle cable is a nice solution to a common problem. Just my opinion.

TRE? Doh, forgot about Dave. Funny thing is that I was going to call him and see what he and I can do if I pick up what he is selling and trade in my stuff. heck, his only has like '4K' miles! Cooling: the shell came with cooling lines and fender cooler (not the trombone kind). However, I will add at the minimum at more behind the spoiler. Exhaust: temporary setup would be to just install the factory exhaust (without the muffler). I realize that I do need to some cutting and re-welding. Throttle cable: hmmm, I'll check their website (if they have one). Please continue supplying with your feedback. Thanks. |

dont they make SSI's for 3.6? That sure would clean things up back there.

What Moses said. but I'll add:
4) Don't underestimate the cost. 5) Don't think one source will have every answer to each question that comes up. I don't know of anyone who is installing 3.6's into an early car as a matter of regular business. TRE would be able to do the job as would other performeance P-car wrenchs. But if you are looking for someone who has done repeated conversions I never heard of any. At this point it would be a custom job. I did mine myself as my first engine drop and found it quite simple. There is lots of information out there. Just read everthing, twice, and get your ducks in a row before beginning. I obtained everything I needed from the following sources, not in any particular order: Harald IG, Inc. Patrick Motor Sports Pelican parts B&B Fabspeed And then were the many board members who contributed their time, tools, and tech support. Good luck.

I would have it all done at one shop, i bought a motor from over seas and some of the parts that were sent are not right, so ask these questions, is the harness and all parts from the same car, if not pass dont look back, was the motor put in a car before you got it, if so pass, it will be worth your time to buy from some one in the states because itll cost you in the end if some of the parts dont match or have been altered, unless you have weeks to wait for parts to arrive, the conversion seems to be fairly straight forward but you will need the help of this bbs, i started doing a build up under 3.6 conversion you may do a search, i plan to finish when i get all the right parts, Kevin

Windsor,
you bought the motor when I was interested in the same thing from Garry, remember? I wanted Garry to split shipping charges and you were willing to pay in full. You won, fair deal. I am now (as soon as I am back in the U.S.) putting my 3.6 motor into my 74 car. Most of the information is out there. Several Web sites with tons of good stuff. The main point is to either have every little piece aquired before doing the conversion yourself or have it done by a reputable shop. You don't want to pay big $$$ to a shop where time is wasted to 'figure' things out. I was planning on having a bunch of people from SoCal attending when I do my swap in mid-May. Paul Scop, Mike Zois, Dave, etc. to name a few. I won't charge a fee FYI: I am not a mechanic. I bought a motor and aquired all the parts over the course of six month. I won't use one of the kits. I am doing the swap in my two-car garage. Basic hand tools, factory manuals and some research is all that is needed. Ingo

Okay, you're getting the good deal because I think the 993 will be pretty slow with a 2.4 engine!!!!

Ingo,
I clearly remember. Now last time we communicated, yours is not a 993 but something else (964?). I have started reviewing the factory manuals so I am better equipped to service the engine, what part is what, etc. I thank you for the invitation--and if you can pinpoint your date in advance-- I will be there. Thanks! |

Windsor,
I am planning on for the weekend of the 16th or 23rd of May. Mine is a 964. I have made a wiring harness for my motor from scratch and already installed everything (harness, conversion harness, DME, relay). I also made the one and wired up k9handler's 993 motor for the swap into a 74 car. There are some differences to be aware of but nothing big. The key is to have the all the parts available before even starting the swap. A lot of things can be done ahead of time such as oil cooling, installation of electrics, putting flywheel/clutch on, and prepping the new motor. The 993 motor needs an air filter, a suitable flywheel/clutch, some engine tin mods, an exhaust, and a throttle cable. Once the old motor/tranny is out of the car you have to notch the bell housing and put the new motor back into the car. You need shorter studs, new hardware to mount the flywheel, etc. All that should be available. Ingo
