86 low beam problem

My low beams work sporadically. Sometimes I have to hold the lever to keep my low beams on. It seems to always want to be in high beam mode. Help needed! Thanks.

Likely fuse related or the stalk/switch is burnt. An old thread from 2005 will get you started, as will a search of this common problem on the site.

I had the same problem, it was my turn signal stalk/high beam switch. From the factory, all of the headlight current goes through the stalk/switch, which creates heat and compromises the stalk. First time it happened, I fixed it using the "quick fix" and added headlight relays from our host (which divert the current away from the stalk). Unfortunately, a few years later problem reoccurred. Ended up replacing the stalk that time and have been fine ever since.

99.9% its the switch. Try the quick fix but changing the switch is easy if you need to. 2-3 hours max. Make sure you add the relays as Darrin did. You can search it on here. Especially important if your running brighter bulbs. Factory design is poor as it puts all the amps for the headlights through those little strips of metal.

86 low beam problem

Great posts - I appreciate your replies and expertise. My eyes are not the best at my age so the quick fix will not work for me. I will be purchasing in the near future the turn signal stalk and high beam switch. Do I need a specific type of headlight relays? I plan on buying the items from Pelican. Again, I want to thank all of you for diagnosing and answering my post!
