I have a 1984 911 cab and the orig temp head sensor has failed. Purchased the new one and removed the rear drivers wheel and grommet to access the orig one. I’ve backed it out and as far as I can tell, its unthreaded completely due to the distance and threads now appearing, yet it still seems to be ‘stuck’ in the hole and just not sure how much ‘force’ can/should be applied to remove it (dont want to damage anything)
QUESTION - is this normal? Do i just need to attached long nose pliers and pull on the old one? Is there something else or a tool or trick to getting it out once its completely threaded out? Thanks in advance, much appreciated! |

It’s been a while since I did this so I had to look it up, but I don’t remember having to pull anything. The entire sensor is pretty much just a threaded stub. I would continue backing it out until you can pull it out, check and make sure something isn’t getting hung up on the edge of the hole where the grommet goes, or if the cable is pulling on the sensor so it isn’t backing out straight.

Thanks Kyngfish. I cut the wire since it was bad, and Ive turned it until it doesn’t seem to back out any further. Will double check but don't think the access opening is interfering either. Maybe i will try to get something on it this eve and just give it a slight but gentle tug. Just wasnt sure if anyone had this same issue or experience prior.

I recently did this job on my 84 Cab. This sensor apparently has a tendency to seize. After applying some relatively modest force and liberal amounts of PB Blaster (which is a must for this job, IMHO), I was able to unscrew mine all the way out. However, in the process, the threads were toast (I suspect your threads are now in the same condition). You will not, I suspect, simply be able to screw in the new sensor. You will probably need to re-tap the threads, which is what I had to do. I believe that there are some postings on this forum about how to do that. I don't remember what size tap I used, but again that info should be available somewhere on here. This was one of the first projects I took on when I got the car, and it was not as easy as it first appeared.
