86 to 88 3.2 swap

3.2 to 3.2 86 to 89 swap. (Corrected

To start my car is a 76 that has a 3.2 swap from an 86 in it. Now im going to an 89 3.2 from a buddy. ( bad leak down on my motor).
questions...

will the harness side of the motor match up? And just have my 86 dme/WONG chip reprogrammed?

Or use the 89 DME, but will 86 harness plug into the 88 DME box? I know the chips are physically different.

Thanks

Bonus points.. 3.2 cams, something street aggressive for mid range. My car is a 2nd & 3rd gear machine.

The engines will interchange fine.

Was your Wong chip a 24 pin or a 28 pin? If he gave you the updated 28 pin chip there is no need to change things. If it is a 24 pin it wouldn't hurt to update to the 89's 28 pin DME.

Two additional things...
The earlier DMEs with the 24 pin ROM can pretty easily be updated to 28 pin by soldering the header/socket for the additional pins and changing some jumpers. It is very well documented on the site.

Kind of the "basic upgrade cam" for a 3.2 with no major work done is the 964 cams. You DO NOT want to rev the engine higher unless you upgrade the rod bolts as they aren't good for much more than 6500 RPM.

i dont want to solder anything.

question is.. the 89 DME is the connector off the harness the same? otherwise ill just use my 86 DME and have the chip flashed. i do not want to move harnesses.

im looking at 20/21 or 993s but it seems the 20/21 has more mid range and thats what im after

Garage
I have the 964 cams in my '87 3.2 with the custom Wong chip and large tube SS heat exchangers and free-flow muffler- love it.

I think people are saying you can re-use your existing engine harness and just straight swap the engine in to the car. All the engine sensor connection will pretty much plug right in. As for having your chip flashed, "flash" memory technology did not exist in 1986 when they designed and manufactured the ECU box. You physically have to remove an EPROM chip, and replace it with another EPROM chip. It's even a through-hole technology as opposed to surface mount.

Assuming the 89 engine's not in need of an overhaul and if you're only needing to address bad leak down numbers in your '86 engine, why not temporarily install the 89 as-is, do a top end on the '86 and, while it's apart, upgrade the cams on the '86? Then, you can sell good '89 as-is for more $$ than you'd get for your currently-needs-work '86 AND end up with a fresh engine in your car
