I've got the worst of both worlds. Just blew my A/C blower motor 2 weeks ago so it REALLY doesn't work. Plus, I still have the added weight.

It wasn't like I removed a perfectly working, efficient AC unit. I bought my car and it was a Garage queen with 49K and mostly stock.....except the AC didn't worked, just needed recharged. Sound familiar? I did the recharge thing, still not cool enough. Then I just let it go for 2 years until I started modifiying my engine. I was just easier and looked better withought that big Japanese condensor plopped on the engine. The way I see it, there are 4 catagories:

1. Those who's AC doesnt work and they never use it or plan on using it. It is left in for the "next" owner to discover it doesn't work

2. Those who AC doesn't work and they try all the recommended improvements. These people can be identified by the propensity to always park their car in the shade or else it will take 2 hours of highway driving to "cool" it down. Can also be identified by large wet marks at the small of their back.

3. Those that have removed everything and have no more concerns about its function or resale value.

4. Those who have invested a large percentage of the cars original purchase price into extensive AC upgrades. Can be seen with thermometers held to the AC vents. Also have nightmares over freon leaks.

Which one are you?

(Once again, this is all in fun. You hot weather guys just need to get a water cooled 996 for the hot days!)

Hey - I'm a "Type 3" personality! Everything A/C related - and I mean everything - is gone. Unless you have the cardex, you'd never know it even had A/C. OK, so I screwed the "originality" part of the deal. Maybe I hurt the resale. I don't care - its my car, I'll have fun with and make it exactly what I want - not what I think the next owner wants. Besides, my car if you're worried about resale on these cars, I have bad news for you...

It may not be the best working A/C known to man, but on a 95 degree day does the job.

I think the guys who rip out their A/C either don't need it, or they have never felt an updated A/C system. I could not live with my Porsche for 3 months, and for 3 months in Memphis, TN it is stinky hot and humid.

Guys, we don't think twice about adding 800-1000 for ss headers or 300 for a chip or 4000.00 for a set of fiske's why don't you find a fellow porsche club owner that has functional a/c and ask him for help.

I'm also a #5 - My A/C produces nice cool air on a 90 degree humid Atlanta day.

Don't get me wrong: having no a/c is punishing. For the last three months out here in The Valley, I've come out of my car sweating like a fat lady in a bayou side show. "Glow," ain't the word for a summer w/o a/c in a P-car.

But form follows function. My car needs all the advantages it can to stay up with 930s and 3.6 transplants. ;)

I understand the need for A/C, esp in places like the deep south and southwest and more so if its your daily driver.

Here in the more temperate Mid-Atlantic, doing without A/C is not the big of a deal - at least for me. My Carrera is not my main source of transportation - its a nice-weather-when-I-feel-like-driving-it car. Rain, snow, and 100F + 90% humidity = Honda Accord. On top of that, I typically go without A/C in my cars that do have it if possible.

I am, however, working on a p-car daily driver (that bill is stuck in approprations, if you get my drift). That car will definately have to have cold A/C.

Sounds like a 993 would fit that bill!

OK, while the 993 is possibly my favorite 911 variant, my car of choice right now for a DD is a 968. Hard to explain why, but mainly because they've always been my 2nd favorite p-car (I already own a version the 1st). I've liked those cars since they first came out, too bad it seems like I'm one of the few :). I'd also really love to experience the whole 50-50 weight thing I've heard so much about. Flame away guys...

Went through the same thought process earlier this summer - remove the A/C (not working) or get it working cheaply (higher priorities, necer use it - Cabriolet!). Decided to try the Duracool recharge kit for $50 and it worked great. Took me a while to figure out how exactly to recharge the system, but once I did the A/C is blowing in the low 40's, whcih seems to be plenty! I put in a center vent and it does the job on hot Ohio days. Still cannot see any sign of coolant in the drier window? I am curios to see how long it will last, but it has already been 8 weeks and it is cooling off here so I mon't need it until next Spring!
