buying a car through Paypal

Selling a car to a guy in another state. He wants to pay through Paypal a significant amount of money and send a hauler to pick it up. Is this a safe way to handle the transaction?

Many Thanks,

Chris

No, not particularly, but I've done it before on a cheap car because it was easy.

I have sold several cars remotely. I have taken a small deposit thru paypal. Then I had the bulk of the money wired directly to my bank. Once its in your bank you are pretty safe.

Thanks, will not be accepting Paypay payment. Be curious what the supposed buyers reaction will be. No response so far.

Paypal is not likely to allow it. They have limits to the transaction to limit the fraud they have experienced. Low dollar cars are ok, but anything else trips the buzzer. I've sold a number of higher dollar cars on ebay. In the end, I was able to basically get the buyer comfortable with the fact that he was dealing with a legit seller. It becomes a one sided transaction of sorts in that I required they send funds ( that I could verify) , the I would send them the title and allow car to be picked up. Legit buyers generally get comfortable with this but takes some work. There are services that ebay will point you at to essentially broker the transaction ( money sent to them, title sent to them, they ensure safe transaction), but its not cheap. Good luck.

Go read my post on Rennlist in the Canada section entitled "Paypal beware "
I got screwed out of $1000.00 by Pelican member Gunter356 when he backed out of a transaction for a roll cage i sold him.I had to reimburse Paypal and pay an additional $1000.00 in storage penalties and return shipping to get my item back.So basically it cost me $1000.00 to get back a roll cage that i had sold for $800.00 shipped, not to mention having to reimburse Paypal as they voted in favor of the douchebag.

Paypal is a ****ing joke , it's fine if you pay for something on Amazon or Ebay , but i will never use Paypal again ...
If i sell anything of value again it's bank transfer or no deal !

Write up a contract for the car email him a “copy” of the pink then have him wire the money then after you have received it FedEx the pink to him.

Tell them you have a friend going that way with a trailer and you can bring the car to him and want cash. He will come up with a myriad of excuses why he cant do that.
