SC Targa bar seal R&R

Ok y’all:

Against my better judgement, I decided that I would scoop a new targa bar seal for the 79SC. I am too cheap for the “real” one; so - I will install the URO one and this is a little thread on my woes.

First up:

My targa bar seal look(ed) pretty beat up. It was split into 3 pieces. ...So after I determined that I could just “pull it out” (ie: there were not any fasteners holding it in place) - this is the reason that I opted to replace it, even though I will acknowledge that I may be playing with fire using the more cost-effective solution on this car.

Now that the old crusty “seal” is out, I have a real mess to clean up before I install a new seal.

So: tomorrow I am supposed to take a vacation day, I will clean that channel area up with a bit of adhesive removal and give a go at installing this beast.

A couple questions:

I have 2 holes that look to have been drilled in the targa bar at some point of this car’s life. That does not look it was placed there in production (it is not pierced with a stamping die, and does not look like it was put there by a line worker). I do not believe that I will be closing those holes up, but: I am hesitant to dig any deeper, because this car does not see a lot of rain unless one of those “pop-up” showers happen. Anyone else see this in their “targa bar seal area”?

Next up:

When I watched a P-car video about sealing and such: I noticed that there *should* be a fastener that goes here (perhaps a X-mass tree of some sort) - on both sides of this targa pin-hole:

Looks like I have a date with a shop-vac!

For the record ... see the attached vid that I watched...

I do not speak German, but the video is helpful in how to tackle this job so far.

Here are the part numbers for your missing fasteners:

999-703-186-40-M100 Plastic Rivet/Plug (sold per each, 4 required), 911SC / Turbo (1978-1983)
999-591-384-40-OEM Cap for Plastic Rivet/Plug (sold per each, 4 required), 911SC / Turbo (1978-1983)

There is a special install tool that people have made to install these.

On the hole, check around the front of the Targa shell. I had 8 to 10 sheet metal screws holding it on. You may just be missing a screw.

Ayles!

Nice catch: there are several screws missing in the targa bar (that I will need to replace). I am not sure what size they are, but there is like 2 of them installed elsewhere. I need like 6 of them (sheeeesh!).
These holes are not drilled, and there is indeed a thread behind these holes.

Dennis (timmy2) was kind enough to post Sealing of 911 information in a Dropbox several years ago which should help with your Targa seal installation.

Workshop vs Service Manual. Whats the diff? Bentley?

I think the screws you are looking for are tapping screws, B 3.5 x 9.5, N-013957-5. The PET indicates that 15 screws are needed.

Fellas:

Thank you for the information.

I cleaned the channel up and did a dry-fit of the seal while I wait for parts to be delivered: this is MUCH better than the old turd that was there.

After I replaced 13(!!!) of the 15 of the tapping screws in the targa bar - I ended up with the following:

That looks about 1,323 times better than the old seal. So: I threw the top on while it is in it’s dry-fit status and I wait for more parts.

Now, ... What is supposed to go here???

It also looks threaded. I hope this is a hardware store item, but I have my doubts the way this car is....

SC Targa bar seal R&R

Those holes are for the M6 threaded plastic plugs that cover the holes for mounting the factory ski rack. You need four plugs altogether.

Targa Owners: Let's chip in and get this video translated?

That new rear seal looks great. If you scroll down to post 25 and 26 of this thread, I had a German -> English translated transcript of the video produced. May help with any last-minute buttoning up.

Hi everyone, just an FYI that in January our engineers instructed the production line to ensure the length of the side sections is correct. The prior production runs weren't as consistent as they should have been, and some seals ended up with side sections that were too short.

If anyone receives a seal that's too short on the sides, send us a PM or contact us via our web site with your purchase details and we'll get you a replacement. The next production run won't be available for about a year, so we'll have to replace the short ones as needed - sorry for the hassle.

well done! so how does the length look by the door? can you show a pic near the door? in the past the URO seals have been 1/2" short

URO

not sure i understand your statement..do you have proper length units available now?.

Recall we ve had a dialogue on another thread about replacing my "short one (never installed) with the new design but now it sounds like that is a year away?..I can ship you the short one back today if you wish?

Because I was asked about the appearance of how the ends look: I believe that this is the way that it is ‘supposed’ to look.

I realize that there is a lot going on here, and I am sure that there are other parts that are a little beat and will need to be replaced, but I think that once I put the black window trim back, this will look as factory as it can be.

With this in mind, I do not know that asking URO to replace this seal is worth while because I do not think it will look any better.

the length discrepancy being discussed is shown in the 1st and second image in which the end of the seal should insert into the lower seal lumen. Thus my question to URO

Interesting. The bar seal is supposed to go into the lower weather strip? My old one most certainly did not; but the old seal was beat.

It's not that all of our 1974-1985 Targa Seals (911 565 091 45) are 3/4" too short on the sides, the production line just wasn't consistent enough when the side sections were cut to length so they vary between being just a bit short and up to 18mm too short.

The length of the side sections is now flagged for future production runs, so all of the seals should be the correct length starting with our next production run about 11 months from now.

If anyone received a seal that's around 3/4" too short on the ends, send us a PM or contact us via our web site with your purchase details and we'll get you a replacement with longer side sections than what you have now. Or if you can, wait until about a year from now and we'll be able to get you a full-length replacement.
